It updates the quest in your journal for you as well.
There are a lot of quests where you can find a peaceful resolution if you manage to find the right clues or ask the right questions. I'm looking forwards to playing through the game again with a different character and part of the fun of that will be making different choices from my first playthrough to see how different quests play out and what effect that has.
Picking up the journal won't help unless you read it.
Also- one of the magnifying glass tooltips in the lighthouse 2nd floor alludes that maerwith the pirate (charred barrel inn: brackenbury) grew up there...
