You have to be sneaking for this to work, which is why most people play on double speed with stealth constantly on.
Well no rogue for my first play, I have yet to find an item with Mechanic+ quoted rest but just +1 My main char is focused on this skill, but he started with only +1 if I remember well. I don't think I found/use any companion with a better context for the skill.
And even if 2 custom character and 4 companions is a nice balance, I prefer stick to my current party.
(I thought it was perception, but I started leveling Eder's stealth and he is starting to detect secrets whereas before it was only my rogue)
One detail, the game force activates search and sneak at same time, but it is clear on that.
I think PoE2 targeted the problem a bit, but I don't remind how. Anyway PoE1 is an experimentation with dev trying pick "old school" designs and merge them to modern design or adapt them to a more modern spirit. The result is a lot of its design is wobbly, but dev designing something they don't really like themselves, and trying imagine what want players, no surprise it's half broken.
