Same here.
And tough enemies? I'm still in chapter 2, and all th enemies here were pushovers.
So the only (probable) conclusion I can draw right now is that there might be 4 or 5 strong elementals guarding the exit door, and if you place the stones where they belong, the machines suck in and trap those strong mobs, leaving the exit unguarded.
Before placing any (or maybe did I place 1) the exit was guarded by some very powerful mob including a huge master among them.
as I placed 1 more and continued my guerilla tactic and return them in parts, I was surprised to not see that master anywhere.
So it's reasonable to have removed some monsters at the exit.
