Game refuses to install from disc
Stops after 3.5 gigs and tries to download the rest.
Even forcing installation from disc won't work with pillars.
What the heck?

Same here. Glad to see I'm not alone.

What's a disc? :)

Tried coping the install onto the hard drive first then running install? Maybe even ISO it?

You're gonna have to download at least part of the game. There's been a patch since the DVDs were minted.

Does it say Internet connection required on the box. Lately games have been installing from the internet regarless if you buy them on disk. All the files are not contained.

Yes, it does. But the disc weighs 6,8gigs, that sounds weird

Yes, it says "required for activation" not "for installing half the game via potato connection".

Well there you go then. Its doing what it supposed to do.

Most likely it checks how many files are different than the files that are on the disk and downloads those. In other words it is patching the game from the version that was included on the disk to the current version.

That sounds right but I remember that the installation has stopped at about 9000mo in other words it has stopped way before the end of installation that is about 14000mo

Yeah same, something is screwy with this... the disk only unpacks to 3.5GB, but it says 14Gb in the install form disk dialogue, but it quits before the end and i have to dowload 2.5gb off the net, which is about $30 extra on my wireless plan...

WTF, there is no way in hell the patches since release are almost half the size of the game... Searched the net for any solutions...nothing, there is got to be a better way than this...I buy retail because my internet bandwith is at a premium, i know ill have to download something but not half the friggin game :(

Edit.... on top of that it hangs halfway through the disk install...7836 mb exactly for ages... not happy that ill have to pay extra in internet dowloads because the install is screwy :(

Bump.
The game won't install from disc. The disc space is getting allocated, but Steam won't copy any of the DVD content. I'm pretty annoyed by this, because my internet connection is very limited ATM (5gb limit) and that's the main reason why I have bought the physical copy of the game. I was ready to get the game updated and activated via internet, but the need of downloading it as a whole was a very unpleasant surprise. I tried to change the installation folders or install the game in various languages, all for nothing.
You can't be serious guys. This game aims at the "old" gamers that mostly, just like me, aren't really Steam fanboys (because regional blocades, DRM and tons of other restrictions). I would rather get the game on 4-6 CDs (just like the old times, do you remember Baldur's Gate?) than downloading it at the moment.
Right now I'm just packing the whole fckin PC on the back of my motorcycle just to visit my bro in other city, to download this damn thing. Sorry for my anger, but I really dislike those restrictions everywhere.

I am also having this problem. It doesn't appear to be copying anything from the disk, and wants a 5.7GIG download straight up from Steam. It skips the "installing files" part of the install process without copying anything. :/

Surely there hasn't been 5.7GIG of updates, already?

Is there a workaround for this?

A user reply from the official Obsidian forum: "Unforuntately, the physical release only contains a copy of the Steam version - Paradox/Obsidian aren't the only ones to pull this stunt, so I'm afraid you need to be careful to check the specifics when buying games in future (the back of the box should mention the need for a Steam account).

If you have limited Internet access, then realistically your best option is to purchase from GOG - you'll still have to download the game but you can do so using another system or Internet connection (e.g. use a public library to copy the installer onto a USB stick) which you can't do with Steam.

As for patches, this is a new game and all new games tend to require large patches. Your best option may be to wait for a few months (the next patch, 1.05 is due in May) and then (re)purchase the GOG version since Steam is inevitably going to require more bandwidth."

This isn't an issue with them choosing to tie the physical release with Steam, it's an issue with the game not installing from the physical media you purchased (Usually one buys physical media in this day and age because their internet sucks).

There's no indication that Steam is simply downloading update data, it just begins downloading "stuff" immediately after allocating free space. The disc never spins up once you've entered the product key and accepted various license agreements that the installer on the DVD disk displays.

It's gonna take 4 hours for me to finish the 5GB download the DVD installer started, instead of taking less than half an hour if it installed straight from the disc and than updated...

Ugh, this is garbage. I just bought the game and having the same issue. Myself and my girlfriend bought two copies, because our only internet option is wireless which is extremely limited in quota.

Now I find out the disc is as useless as a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ coaster. I could have just bought it off Steam cheaper. If it's a 4gb download each that's going to cost us another $80. Seriously pissed off right now. Why even give us a disc if it does nothing? There's content on there, so there must ba workaround.
Mansen Dec 13, 2015 @ 4:41am
It's not entirely a useless coaster - You still save having to download what's on the disc. But the entire game is approximately 6 discs in total, so you'll still have to download most of it.

You can whine and rant all you want, but it won't change reality. You can download the game on a machine that has unmetered bandwidth and create a "backup" to install on your metered connections.

Also you seem to be forgetting all of the patches games like this is guaranteed to get. You're going to pay those 80 bucks down the line anyway from patches post-release.
