Your character class means a lot this early before having a full party. Playing as a Wizard must be hell unless you use all your spells and rest after each fight. I don't think Eder alone could keep the aggro.
DIdn't know about the other companion. I tried talking to Eder but I don't get the option to recruit him. (No spoilers please.) Sleeping should help bc I'd run out of spells for my druid. I'd already fought the bandits, wolves, and assorted others, then traveled to Gilded Vale before trying to clear the temple.
My druid does decently as a tank. Her deflection is high bc I had resolve as a tertiary stat and she can use her bear form if things get bad. I will probably have to level up before I can even clear the first floor but I'll see. I don't like to level up until I have to but I think I may have to here. I like that the temple is hard and forces me to do things (e.g., recruit or hire) or maybe leave it for now and come back later (after a few quests).
Therefore, spoiler for that companion: Just follow the road south from the town, and you should find him easily enough. Though now that I think about it, you might have to do advance the plot first, and if that's the case... See the next spoiler.
Spoiler for recruiting Eder: Sleep. It should be easy to figure out from there.
if you think they are bad early one wait until you get to clear out the lighthouse...what a pain
Get Aloth from in front of the inn.
Sleep at the inn, talk to the lady in the tree, Eder will join afterwards.
I managed to clear Level 1 at this group.
You can also go South and get Durance from Magran's Fork, Level 2 shouldn't be much problems with a group of 4 at that point.
Rinse and repeat if they tele again.
Whenever I use Fan of Flames, they teleport out of the area of effect before I'm done casting, and even if I hit them in full with a fireball, it only manages to take the shadows about 50% down and barely grazes the shades.
Best result so far is downing 1 shade, the 2 original shadows and 2 respawns. But I still get whacked by the second shade and the respawns.
I guess I'll try again once I get a Priest to join me :) (Or if I end up getting Frost-resistance gear)
another example is facing battle horrors too early
another is going down the sewer to early in temple district and be destroyed by draug fea and his gang.
or fighting ankheg or carrion crawler to early etc,,,
