level cap is 12 kind of lame
why is it so small i thought dragon agoe inquistion was bad with level 30 cap. does it really long to level and with the cap being so low character progession would seem to be lacking due to not getting new moves or spells frequent enough?

I take it you've never played D&D.

Believe it or not lvl 12 is a pretty high level, ive put over 50 hrs into BG1 and by the end of the game i was only lvl 8.

How exactly is a level cap of 12 a problem?

Baldurs Gate 1 had a Level cap of 7 without the Expansion - Tales of the Sword Coast expanded the Level Cap to 8.
Baldurs Gate 2 had a Level cap of 19, Throne of Bhaal expanded it to a max level of 40, which was nearly impossible to reach without running around for ages to grind experience points. ( I think the 'usual' level at the end of ToB was around 24-29, if that.)

A level cap of 12 is perfectly fine for Games like this - especially if it's the >first< game, there might be another one afterwards where you can import your character, like in Baldurs Gate - what would they do if you already reached level 30 or 40 in PoE1 ? Allow you to get to level 80? Let's be serious here, you'd be, in most Pen and Paper roleplaying games a GOD or at least a HALF-GOD with level 80.

Level cap of 12 is actually good, I hated starting Baldur's Gate 2 at high level because leveling took forever just to get minor adjustments...levels feel like they mean much more when you're lower.

Level Cap has nothing to do with the length of a game..Each level takes a long time to obtain. 1 level and hour for 60 hours for 60 total levels is the same as 1 level every 5 hours for 12 total levels for 60 hours.

level 12 in d&d terms is about....66,000xp? and is quite high since most characters rarely go above 20 or even reach 20 unless the campaign goes on for quite a while or you have a generous dm. After 20 things get a bit out of hand with the "epic level" abilities.

you cant judge the power level from levels,

for example a lvl 20 D&D char would just cream a lvl 30 dragon age guy.
a lvl 20 D&D char had countless of campaigns and will soon start questing for immortality when the dragon age guy is still scared of dragons.

I dont know this games power levels, but considering you do get to have a whole stronghold with sorrounding lands for yourself, it should be close to D&D where lvl 12 is in the area of competing on a state-wide level.

Why are we comparing this to Baldurs Gate and AD&D again? Different rulesets - level 1 != level 1

To put it into perspective for Pillars, after about 25-30 hours I was level 9 on my Wizard. Never had an issue with the leveling pace.

I'm quoting their Website here:
Pillars of Eternity uses a custom rule system heavily inspired by classic and contemporary tabletop fantasy role-playing games.
It's HEAVILY inspired, means, we can safely assume it will be at least somewhat close to AD&D, Baldurs gate and so on.

In theme? Perhaps. But definitely not as far as leveling goes as is obvious within minutes of playing.
Level cap at 12 was a major selling point for me.
Achelon Mar 26, 2015 @ 5:20pm
Situation A: There is a level cap of 72, for each level up (+ the first level), you receive 1 point to attribute to various skills and talents.

Situation B: There is a level cap of 24, for each level up (+ the first level), you receive 3 points to attribute to various skills and talents.

Situation C: There is a level cap of 8, for each level up (+ the first level), you receive 9 points to attribute to various skills and talents.

Mechanically, all these situations are equivalent once you've reached the respective caps, what you should look at is how much you unlock for each successive level up, the level cap alone is just an arbitrary number.

I think it's about a so called small ♥♥♥♥ complex.

It's when you are afraid of numbers in the low teens.
