Default save game directory?
Hi!

Loving the game so far. Nevertheless, I discovered that the loading times were comparatively a little long for areas such as the houses in first village you encounter. So I figured I could just re-install the game on one of my SSD drives (one I keep exclusively for games I want to have faster loading times in). Now came the issue of making sure that uninstalling it via Steam does not delete my save files. So I figured I could back them up and then uninstall/reinstall on the other drive. But I couldn't locate the save files, not in the SteamApps directory, or the standard My Documents directories, I checked Appdata as well, no luck.

Could anyone of you fine people help me out?

Thanks!

Thanks a bunch! I've only had like two games previously that would actually store the save files there. Silly of me not to check it first.

Have a good night, bud!

https://forums.obsidian.net/blog/7/entry-175-location-of-save-games/

Pillars of Eternity stores its save games in the following locations:

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Pillars of Eternity

%USERPROFILE% usually is something like C:\Users\your-name-here

OS X
~/Library/Application Support/Pillars of Eternity/Saved Games

Linux
$XDG_DATA_HOME/PillarsOfEternity/SavedGames

If $XDG_DATA_HOME is not defined, it's stored in ~/.local/share

There is one other folder that you may find in your temporary locations where we build and maintain the current game state, but this is not intended to be shared / used if you go to play on another machine.

For the Backer Beta, save games were stored in non-standard locations, such as roaming or temp folder locations. Those were changed for the final game release.

Running OSX here, and I must be missing something, because under Application Support there is no PoE directory.... I have made sure to run the game and create a save file, but that folder didnt show up. Where else could it be?

On OS X PoE directory in Application Support is hidden. You just need to copy this line:

~/Library/Application Support/Pillars of Eternity/Saved Games

and click go -> go to the folder and paste this.

I just came here to say that this game isn't actually respecting XDG variables. My cache is set to a tmpfs mount in ~/.tmp yet the game created ~/.cache - I'd file this as a bug, but this thread is already open, so hopefully the devs will take notice.
