Depends what you mean by "like". the gameplay is somewhat close, but arcanum is more like fallout 1&2, where poe is more like baldur's gate or icewind dale. Narratively speaking it's the same type of game, adventure rpg, with a lot of text and choices to make etc.
Now arcanum is steampunk, that alone makes it unique (cause that's way underused, I don't even think another good steampunk rpg was actually made), whereas poe has a standard fantasy setting.

I bought Arcanum when it came out. Last playthrough was 2 months ago. That's how much I enjoy that game. I loved the writing and the atmosphere. PoE won't capture the subtle humor, but it looks to handle the intricacies of race and class like Arcanum did.

I was lured to Arcanum after playing the BG series and you'd probably like BG and therefor PoE. I liked Arcanum very much too. Granted, I haven't played PoE yet but I'm sure you would love the BG series if you loved Arcanum. Complex character creation, open ended gameplay and a big game world are the biggest similarities.

right on. the things that OP probably digs in Arcanum are present in the titles you just listed. Arcanum had the illest backgrounds though. they cracked me up. character creation was amazing. Troika games are excellent at that. the spirit lives on.

No it is not. Troika had actual integrity and creativity, which is evident in games like Arcanum.

They made original games, and actually got a D&D license (ToEE) instead of making a barely legal ripoff system.

Troika made their own games, and weren't afraid of making something new instead of just parroting Bioware and making budget sequels.

Troika didn'y shy away from so called 'unconventional' sexuality and allowed multiracial sexual liaisons, even a zoofiliac encounter, which was a much more progressive stance on gaming. Troika was literally on the right side of gaming history.

Troika had the integrity to shut their doors and pay their workers a healthy severance when they couldn't make any other high quality RPGs. Obsidian is happy to make any MMO ripoff like this world of tanks copy business.

You are trying too hard, Chron.

Anywho, I am not sure how much this will have in common with Arcanum. Tim Cain, who helped helm Arcanum, designed the Stronghold and some other systems for PoE. I think this should be similar with regards to reactivity.

You probably wont get anything closer to the arcanum than this.

Ditto. NOT like arcanum. at least in "feel" it has a similar sense of scope and detail and options to resolve quests...and though it has much in common with everything from Ultima 7 to Fallout 2 to Divinity...upon firing it up your reaction will be that if "feels like baldurs gate" if you played them. Thats mostly mechanical though, its like being able to jump into a vehicle and know how to operate it, just because its a saab vs a bmw it still "feels like driving a car".
But if you found something in Arcanum that attracted you, that you cant put your finger on, but you notice the same quality in other games even if they arent the "same". Then youll dig it. The gas pedals in the right place and the units are in your native language, its up to you if you like how she drives.
All I know is that any devs who worked on : Fallout (any). Ultima Underworld. Dark Sun. Baldurs Gate. Mass Effect. Monkey Island. Dig.Syste, Shock ----Dont care they will get my money. Over and over again. even if i dont know their new company name, even if its not the daggerfall2 i wanted....these guys helped form some of my best media memories and ill always want to see what they go on to work with, whether its AAA, has romances, or what.
♥♥♥♥ if Tim Schafer said he was going to make a call of duty game id probably buy it just to see.

Arcanum was example how not to do combat, they wanted to please everybody TB and RtwP players and failed on both accounts. Story, character creation and map exploration was phenomenal but combat was just bad.

BTW Troika was in a bid for Fallout license, they even started working on post-apocalyptic 3D game (likely new fallout game, there are screen-shots somewhere on the web), but they lost the bidding war with Bethesda. If they would have kick-starter support, Bethesda would have to pay more than the paltry $1.4 mil for the license from Interplay.

Arcanum was an isometric RPG with the option of having combat in real time with pause. Its development team also overlaps some with Pillars of Eternity.
