I only wish the game had screamed at me "PLAY A MAGE! PLAY A FREAKIN' MAGE!" when it booted up. I actually thought it was decent, but not that remarkable, the first time I played through - because I did so as a warrior.
The additional options - story, history, in conversation, etc. - you gain from boosting WIS, INT, and CHA made the 2nd playthrough incomparable to the first, it was that much improved.
The skill/stat check via conversation aspect which played heavily into that really made it work well.
And man, the story. On that 2nd play, so much of it really hit hard. On the first run, I just killed the dude. On the second, I had them merged. I had legit tears after the 2nd, when everyone was saying their goodbyes.
No doubt, great post! Loved Planscape Torment! Wonderuflly written, like alot of Black Isle/Obsidian games. I would say Planscape Torment and Mask Of Betrayer arguably two of the best written games ever.
2- Icewind Dale
3- Fallout 2
That's a home run list if I ever seen one.
I think that if you added BG2, that would be my dessert island complete with a computer, list.
Agreed!
But as much as I hate to admit it (well, not really....), New Vegas takes the cake. I HATE fps. Despite this would-be fatal flaw, the opus that is the battle for the fully fleshed out Mojave (and additional areas, the dlcs are a must) is just so compelling. So much to do, great stuff to look at, and the writing is up there with all the rest. Kotor 2, especially with TSLRCM.
BG games are not BI, they are Bioware games. Fallout 1 was also not Black Isle. That was interplay directly, before Tim Cain, Leonard Boyarsky, and Jason Anderson took off to start Troika. You guys are getting your devs confused.
