From what i gather you will come across some one or it could be from your stronghold that you will get an npc who will give you info to start the quest. I have not seen any thing to suggest that you need to have played through to the end and have a save from final ending also you get 2 new comps that can join you from the dlc wich i gather once you have them you can go back and forth from the world map to the normal game and dlc. This could be the case but i could also have misunderstood the info about the dlc but this is how i am going about playing for now.
You need to at least do the Woedica quest after Maerwald, once you are out of the undeground temple you get a message saying that you need to speak with the stone lady in your keep.

I wish it started after the last boss, I had to load a save prior to the pit jump in order to do this DLC which makes leaving the vanilla area unfinished as you move to a new area. I mean here is this big threat and your guys are like hey lets head North into the snow

Hmm, I also would prefer it to be a separate campaign where you could import the character with which you finished the original campaign, or make a new sufficiently high level character if you preferred. Luckily, I kept my saves and had a save just before the endgame. Might have waited for the whole expansion to come out before replaying if I hadn't done so.

Man I wish I'd known this before I bought the expansion. So I have to restart the game from scratch to be able to play it? All my save slots are inside the Pit.

Yes, you are.

Agreed. They should have seen this coming. The pit keeps it from being an expansion...

At the time these popped up both the White March and the Siege of Craigholdt or something like that came up. If you aren't 10 + level I would stay away from Siege. White march seems to be scaled for 5-7 or 8th level except for a certain specific encounter.

On start I wonder why they feel forced to do a final pit section not allowing leave it, pointless design.

I just started the game and thinking to get the expansions, if you start the white march before finishing the game, can you later come back and finish the main quest? Without loading a save?

yep you can and should do the white march content before finishing the main game quest. That is how the expansion is designed.

finishing the main quest will end the game and roll the credits

nice thanks, I was just wondering if it was totally separate from the vanilla game, or if it ties into it it. I guess its the latter then.
