But this alpine dragon is just as hard! My entire party gets wiped with just one freeze blast from the dragon and...well, thats it really...probably about 2 seconds of actual fighting...
Sorry I can't offer any help....but I'm as stuck as you are. All these Youtube videos of people playing on PoD and just standing in front of it are really annoying, because that's simply not how the fight takes place...in most peoples videos, the dragon doesn't even blast them once...and yet, it happens to me every time without fail.
Whatever, at least I know I finished the campaign on Hard, that's good enough.
It's not meant to be easy but it doesnt mean its impossible.
OP: try enchanting your tanks with cold-proofed and train them in Lore to be able to resurrect ppl. A paladin is the best choice since it hits hard and has a natural rez.
at this point, ♥♥♥♥ you. I'm off. solve your fight on your own like I did.
If the battle lasts only 5 seconds for you, you haven't tried much. Clearly, what can cause the most frustration is that the battle lasts for a much longer time without getting closer to killing that beast. There aren't enough earlier fights where to practice for epic battles like this, where only enchanted weapons and armors are not enough.
Meanwhile, at "hard" my current level 13 party has arrived at the ice cave, too. I haven't found a solution yet either. Some time between 2.00 and 2.03.0788 I've noticed an increase in number of enemies. Perhaps that is because of only one NPC (Durance) in the party. The wraith and spectres are less of a problem. The many ice blights cause me the most trouble, as 2-3 survive for a long time and disturb me too much when the dragon comes close. I refuse to read walkthroughs or watch videos where players managed to attack only the blights without the dragon turning hostile.
The dragons defenses are 108 119 119 103. DR is 32. Immune to crush/freeze damage. Shock DR 40. Fire DR 16.
Everytime I've managed to defend against the Terrified/Frightened debuff and increased Accuracy, too, the dragon's defenses are at max again after a few seconds. Not enough time to apply something helpful or do lots of damage.
My main fighter could be retrained for a bit higher defenses and Lore 4 for Scroll of Defense. I'm also still quite clueless with my ranged Cipher, who is mostly an Archer and doesn't use the gained Focus for more than 1-2 different spells.
I can confirm that the fight is doable on PotD, and I did get blasted twice. I opened the fight with crown of the faithful from my priest, had my monk tank run on the dragon and draw attention from everything he could.
My mage cast all his selfprotection spells, the first was the level 2 spell that increases endurance.
When the ghosts spawned I used all my summons. Kept using AoE's (esp ring of death) with my mage, buffing all I could with my priest, esp. accuracy. I used the level 3 mage spell that lowers defenses on the dragon. By now, most other enemies where dead, so I moved the rest around a bit, then cast gaze of adragan on all of them. Hit the dragon with all single target damage I had, and down he went.
Just trying to help here, I do not mean to patronize the OP or anyone, but I do not appreciate pople crying for games to get easier. I made the battle on my fourth try, and I went in prepared to try 20 times, so I had expected this fight to be a lot tougher.
The Alpine Dragon is different, hard to say easier or harder than the Adra. It's strange, I got no any chance to paralyze it with the scrolls, but it can be petrified ( the most powerful effect/debuff ) by a wizard spell, so the battle seems very difficult without Aloth or any custom wizard.
My party was: paladin-tank ( main char ), Durance, Aloth, Grieving Mother/Eder, Zahua, Devil of Caroc. 14 lvl everyone, PotD, no any durgan steel enchantment.
Of course, a good customized party would be better, but it breaks the role-playing component ( a little bit ).
P.S. Sorry for errors, English isn't my native language.
I'm still only a sporadic user of food, potions and scrolls.
Since I was aiming for the No-Knockout-Achievement in this run aswell (and Christ above, I did get it) this fight is just pestilence. POTD/Expert/HLS point of view.
I don't know if youre doing this in addition aswell, or if you just try to down this lovely kitten.
A few things I've figured that might help you (cheese included) :
If you have a ranger pet, it can walk up to the beast, hit it and the fight starts, also spawning the adds, your party can stay in the far east, downing a bunch of them without adding the dragon, you will still stay infight, so saving after downing some spirits and even some of the ice things without Mister-One-Shot being around is nice, but not an option. You'll need to do it again if you wipe.
If, by any means, you want to tank this guy with one of your chars and not poor summons you'll need this supress afflicition ring or the paladin ability to shorten debuff duraition. Sneak attack will shred you in one blow, if youre dazed/frightened/stunned (hello spectre adds).
My party had four melee chars. Melee against dragons is utter BS. His tailswipe one-shots on a graze. On my tank. His breath is, in comparison, not *always* a one shot, but most of the time. Long story short, ranged weapons AND lore to use scrolls is proably the way to do this, unless you'll get a lucky cc streak on him. Design flaw, in my eyes, the game is still very good, but this feels bad. Turn all people into casters and range dds...Meh.
Talking of cc. People have pointed out, that petrify works and it is probably the one way to spank him. I only had one spellcaster (Mage) so Gaze was my way to go, though hitting the dragon is not that likely. If you have more than one class with a range cc, having both use them in hope one does go through, is safe. Sleep also works, so the level 5 mage sleep spell does also drop him, doesnt aplify the damage of course, but he won't be one-shotting people for 4-5 seconds, which is one step in the right direction.
A scroll that is easy to use (Lore 2 req.), is protection from fear. As I said, I don't have a priest, so I was in need to use that scroll. If you'd look fopr a spell that does the most in comparison for the time used to cast it, its this. The stat loss from the dragons aura adding to his high defenses is immense. You almost never hit him without it, and you want your cc to land.
Another scroll worth using is Maelstrom, it shreds the adds, but is rather useless against the white one himself. Helps you with bomb-dps, if you, like me, lack the respective classes.
The local inn has a nice resting bonus, doesnt hurt to pick that or one from Caed Nua up and a proper buff food won't make things harder on your end.
Like I said at the start, I still didnt beat it, because he always one shots one of my guys with a random ability at a certain stage and this ruins the achievement, but this will be my way again next time, add to that a tank with max. level healing potions so he can last for a couple of seconds and this *should* work after some tries.
Good luck, if you haven't lost hope yet.
