I made one barbarian companion and the rest are story characters. You can find Aloth wizard and Eder fighter in Gilded Vale. It's good to have at least 2 characters that can tank (take damage and distract enemy). Fan of flames is a good wizard spell but be careful you don't inflict too much friendly fire.
I think most helmets are simply cosmetic but you will eventually find magic ones that boosts stats.
4. Since you are playing a wizard you will only have access to one front line melee story NPC character (Eder) until well into mid-game. This is not enough, you need two. I would advise hiring a Paladin or Barbarian from the inn asap to fight alongside Eder.
5. There are helmets that confer buffs in the game but not that many (compared to armours for example). Basic helmets confer no advantages at all and are merely cosmetic.
6. Slicken is excellent as is Chill Fog (which is an excellent opening cast in front of your melee line) at L1, Curse of the Blackened Sight and Miasma of the Dull Mind are very good at L2. L3 is I would look at Llengrath's Displaced Image (which together with Arcane Veil makes a wizard extremely difficult to hit), Kalakoth's Minor Blights which with the Blast and Greater Blast talents does insane amounts of damage for one L3 cast, and Expose Vulnerabilities which knocks 5 off the DR of those tougher monsters (that equates to 5 extra damage per hit per party member which is not to be sneezed at).
An alterantive approach to the Kalakoth's Minor Blights route is L1 Concelhaut's Parasitic Staff. The point of this is the staff has extended reach so the wizard can stand immediately behind the front line melee and clobber enemies with relative impunity when she's fiunished bebuffing/disabling them.
7. Not to my knowledge. I go to the map screen ('M') and click on part i want to go to/look at and exit back to game screen. If I want my party to go there I hit double time (('D') and go back to the map screen to watch them get there.
1. Why do I sometimes get experience when I go to the inn, but sometimes not? I have killed enemies, but it doesn't always do it.
You don't get exp when you go to the inn or kill enemies. You get exp when you complete quests and the bestiary.
2. How do I know if a quest is complete? I took the task, late for dinner, and it says talk to the inkeep at guilded vale, but I don;t have an option to just chat.
Just exhaust all the convo options until the journal updates itself. Then press J to see what to do next.
3. Where would a wizard best put points in the beginning? I have been picking lore, and leaving some unused points till I figure this out.
They get a natural bonus in Lore and Mechanics. But you need 4 points in atheletics to not be constantly fatigued and dragging everyone back to inn.
4. Should I be hiring people from the inn now? Or do I wait till I meet more NPC's? I could definitely use a tank class.
Eder, Durance and Kana are all early-game companions who are tank-able.
5. Whats with all the helmits, that have no stats?
Some of them have magical properties. Otherwise helmits don't do ♥♥♥♥.
6. What are some good level 1-3 spells? I got the slick spell, seems good, and have been getting damage, and either a DOT or DEF spell every level.
Blindness. Combusting Wounds. Fireball (duh). Expose Vulnerabilities.
7. Is there a way to make the map move faster when the mouse touches the edge?
Yes. In the options menu; you can also press M to just click on where you want it to zoom.
3. For every characters you need at least 4 athletics. You need one with great mechanics to pick locks and find hidden places, another with good athletics. For your PC you'd better stick up with Lore.
4.IMHO, you'd better stick with companions. You can beat the game on Normal with them.
Ahh, i forgot to link this guide...
First time entering any map you get experience. So, first time you enter an inn, which is a new map, you get experience. Any subsequent visits to the same map result in no experience.
You get experience for creatures up till the point that you have fully learned the capabilities of the enemy you are fighting. You can check your progress for various enemy types in the Cyclopedia(J key) - Bestiary section. Once all the details for an enemy are known, you receive no further experience when killing one.
2. How do I know if a quest is complete? I took the task, late for dinner, and it says talk to the inkeep at guilded vale, but I don;t have an option to just chat.
Not sure whats going on there. I have been able to successfully check the progress of all my quests via the journal.
3. Where would a wizard best put points in the beginning? I have been picking lore, and leaving some unused points till I figure this out.
Lore isn't a bad option but you aren't going to find many high level scrolls till you are well into act 2(at least in my experience. Lore of 4-6 is plenty for awhile. However, 3 points in Athletics and 2 points in Stealth will make the game a bit easier on you. Athletics will result in your character being able to travel/fight longer with out getting fatigued. A small bump in stealth allows you to bump into hostile creatures while stealthed without becoming instantly visible. Handy if you want to pre-scout areas as much as possible.
4. Should I be hiring people from the inn now? Or do I wait till I meet more NPC's? I could definitely use a tank class.
Player preference here. I didn't. I'm sure there are plenty of people that do.
5. Whats with all the helmits, that have no stats?
Vendor trash.
6. What are some good level 1-3 spells? I got the slick spell, seems good, and have been getting damage, and either a DOT or DEF spell every level.
In order of personnel preference :
Level 1 : Slicken, Minoletta's Minor Missiles, Arkemyr's Dazzling Lights(this saved my ass alot in the low levels)
Level 2 : Concelhaut's Corrosive Siphon, Bewildering Spectacle
Level 3 : Minoletta's Bounding Missiles, Expose Vulnerabilites, Fireball
7. Is there a way to make the map move faster when the mouse touches the edge?
Don't know
I will keep messing around, but in that quest on the dropdown, it says to talk to that chick at the inn. I have talked to every single person.
BTW, I am really enjoying the game. I think it's pretty damn good. I like it more than Baldur's Gate one already, but maybe not as much as 2, still too early to tell. Great game though. Money well spent!
I'm on my first playthrough too and also chose wizard.Hint: two wizards can exchange spells. Just let them take a look into each others grimoire. You can take advantage of this when levelling up.
