Technically all you need to do for that quest is find the machine and inspect it, triggering a scene of the Leaden Key activating it and pulling the souls from the children of Dyrford, in much the same way you saw coming out of the starter dungeon back at the beginning of the game.
As for directions, from the main entrance (there are two doors to the outside in the first chamber) you have to go around the hall to the stairs to the far south, then there are stairs to the north from the big central chamber which links up with the room with the Engwithan machine in it. From there you can head north to a flooded tunnel which deposits you back on the first floor.
