Solmar the Shackler question

So I chose to buy his slaves for 5000 and then left the building. When I opened my stronghold menu there was an option to "pay off" solmar for 1200. What's the deal here? He vanished after the 5K so why do I need to pay him off?

You can pay off bad visitors as to avoid the temporary penalty on stronghold Prestige/Security. Alternatively, you can send one spare companion to escort the bad visitor for a few days as to avoid the penalty.

But I dont understand why it was necessary. I bought his slaves off him. He was gone from the map. Did I ruin the event somehow by paying him off on top of that?

There are two sorts of stronghold visitors. Those visitors that wait in the main hall and want an audience with the lord of Caed Nua. And those that only appear on the stronghold menu screen as an event to handle there. Guys you've met before during an audience may return eventually - seeking an audience again OR just staying as a bad visitor for some days ... i corner-cases there may be some overlap.
