How to upload custom portraits?

I'd like to upload my custom (rat portrait) and I tried on my own but it didn't work (exported two files changed the names of the end to _lg and _sm) I'm wondering what I did wrong. Files exact names/format is
f***_lg.png
f***_sm.png
All the comes up is a pixel red question mark on a white background

What do you mean with "upload"?
Do you mean adding custom portraits to the game?

Which folder/path have you tried?

Default path is: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Pillars of Eternity\PillarsOfEternity_Data\data\art\gui\portraits\player\

And inside you can create a separate folder called "female" and one called "male". That way they will be sorted by sex. No need to use a "f" prefix.

What image dimensions have you tried for your *_sm.png and *_lg.png files?

yes i put it in the right folder/path. yes i put in the "female" folder, i named the file "f*ck" which shouldn't matter. my _lg is 210x330 (same as BG1) and sm is 76x96 (same as all the others)

That continues to work here with 24-bit PNG image files.

Cannot suggest anything else other than checking the folder/file permissions and making sure that none of your security related tools cause access problems.

Sounds odd. Just wondering, does it also happen if you install a premade portrait pack? Such as the following...?

Also, do you quit the game program before you install portraits?
Are the custom portraits broken already in the portrait selector during character creation?
