More like zones of enemies. Spirits in the Lle a Rhemen and Od Nua for example, and a *ton* of enemies from the White March.
Single most frustrating combat mechanic for me, everything else makes sense, or the way to combat it without being cheesy is more or less straight forward ...
but the Paralysis ... er meh gerd kill me.
Then grab Hiravias and Greiving Mother and spam Returning Storm and Amplified Wave against the enemies to return the favor.
Again, I don't like that I have to cheese my way through these kinds of encounters, it defeats the purpose of this being a role playing game that offers you choice. If you are forced to use XYZ all the time then there is no choice.
Lagufaeth, Guls, Xaurip Skirmishers, Wraiths, Caen Gwla and Phantoms off the top of my head.
ARG the Lagufaeth >.<!
P.S.P.S This isn't my first play through the game, FYI, I've got more than 300 hours into it :P
Against paralysis and petrification, Prayer against Restraint grants immunity. It does not fail unless you are under effect from one of the abilities that cancels beneficial effects. If it is not working you have a bug. Litany Against Major Afflictions works specifically against paralysis (and more importantly stun, it's the only spell that grants immunity to stuns). Read the spell description.
I had Litany and Prayer confused, no need to be snarky. You'll notice the continual tone of bemused frustration throughout my posts, not actual anger.
Regardless, they aren't fool proof.
You need to be in combat to cast Litany, and if Durance dex isn't stacked, it can still be cast too slow to stem off the onslaught of Caen's or Lagufaeth (can't cast it while already paralyzed).
And, ... again ... none of that actually changes that the mechanic itself is overused throughout the game.
Maybe you could confuse/paralyze the enemies, before they do it to your team?
I often use the confuse spell with Aloth, totally destroys most enemy groups.
