Eder might be one of the best written NPCs ever
Having witnessed his arc throughout both games now, I can't imagine not having him on my team. He is very down to earth and somehow feels.. genuinely human. Like an actual person you might meet in real life and want to talk to. I haven't given a ♥♥♥♥ about an NPC in quite a long time so it's refreshing to find that in a game. Anyone else had the same experience?

Except for the superlative in "one of the best", yeah, overall he is very enjoyable with his content and integration into the game. I don't mind that his personal quest is so brief and without a cheerful ending, but it's a pity that there isn't much more. Eder could have been a much more active NPC companion. His contributions to inter-character banter and funny comments during exploration feature good voice-acting (in the English version). As an offensive ruffian he becomes a valuable team member even if hiring custom adventurers.

The primary reason I'm more conservative with regard to superlatives is that I've experienced more touching companions (and NPCs in general) in some games. Neverwinter Nights 2 as a prime example of an old CRPG. The way it introduces companions with personalities and voice-over, role-player finds enough reason to care for some them. And several of them show they care for the player character. Ultimately, during a major story event, "The Trial", those companions approach the player character to emphasize on their friendship and to give encouraging support. There have also been other RPGs before, much older ones and newer ones, too, with well-written likable companions and entertaining integration into story events or side-quests - sometimes adding tragedy for story progression reasons.

Eder is so much better and alive in Pillars of Eternity 2. Like he is no longer timid, accept what he is (depending on how you influence her in the first game) but I think atheistic Eder is better, not naive, more mature and more nuanced.

He's a breath of fresh air in this context...as in he's surrounded by characters in which most are sarcastic and, from the dialogue writing and choice of voice actors, appear to have the social capacities of late-teen to twenty-something year olds.
