You can go back and forth freely between the main game and the expansion. No need to interrupt the main game for long. You can start The White March 1, do one or a few fights to see if you're capable enough, then continue with the main game. There is no time limit. Level 7-8 should be plenty for most players as one can start the expansion even earlier but will need high damage output to succeed with the first few battles. If you were at a higher level, there would be a content upscaling option to make the expansions more difficult.
Thanks for the answer. I'll probably go have a look to test the difficulty then. I knew that I should probably go test it out for myself and I can leave any time but my question was also asking what feels like a good time to experience them based on story and the fights, etc. For those that have played both. I want my first time through to be thorough also experience the game in the "best" order. After playing the game do you feel like the expansions are better to be experienced after beating the main story (and if I'm over levelled then turning on the level-scaling option)?
In my opinion, The White March is better than the main game.
