When to play White March, story-wise

Well you can't start it till you have the stronghold. What I did was play with the a party of 4 using ingame characters and added two hirelings after about level 7.

I usually go to the white march at 8-9 lvl. You can return to the original campaign anytime.

For the smoothest difficulty curve do WM1 on standard after Act 2 and only upscale WM2 and Act 3. You'll plough through most encounters but close enough

I think it fits best partway through Act II, during the bit where Lady Webb tasks you with investigating the Leaden Key. I think of it as a fourth lead to follow.

depends how good you are, you can do it early around lvl 6-7. 7 is probably best if you want to do it asap and dont wanna suffer alot

I found a really good line: first get to level 7 - you can achieve that by reaching defiance bay and reaching the 5th level of Caed Nua - then you start WM I and finish it, then you advance some more on Caed Nua - if you are good I think you can even finish it - and on Defiance Bay, don't complete act II yet, when you feel you are finishing it - it will be quite easy to discover that - you go to WM II and finish it.

The third act has a lot of urgency attached to it, so it's a bit strange to stop in the middle of the act to do something clompete different.

This is a great way to think about it. And it fits in nicely.
