Is Royal = Definitive edition?

I ask this because I am unable to find royal edition on store page. (Indian store)

Also, I want to know, do I need to know any story background before starting the game? Any prequels of this game or anything?

The definitive version is the Royal Edition + both expansions. If you haven't bought the game yet this is the version you want.

In the US store, the Royal Edition is available as an upgrade (DLC) to the base game.

This one is the first game so you don't need any additional background.

The only background to know is shown as one of the messages on the game's loading screen - some of the NPCs in the base game are unrelated to the story. They have been contributed by kickstarter campaign backers and can be recognized due to a name plate with a golden/yellow border. Interacting with those NPCs confuses many players.

What else? Don't rely on the included PDF manual. It's out-of-date and has been updated to reflect the changes to the game since the v1 releases. Spend most of the initial time on examining what details and explanations the game displays on the character creation screens and later in the builtin cyclopedia pages.
