The better option might be to increase your defenses with the help of a Priest.
Priests are a bit lost on me still. I mostly use Durance for Interdiction to debuff enemies and then some healing and a few random spells.
With the way most spells are combat-only in PoE, you can't pre-buff your party. And it feels like a waste to spend time throwing up some party buffs against attacks/ailments that may not even eventuate.
Priest also has SO many spells.. I dont even know what half of them do
It's worth it to study the spells though. A lot of them are essential, like Bless or Circle of Protection or Remove Fear or the one that stops confusion. As you face different enemies you will learn what you need for each encounter. Most priest buffs and protection spells are quick to cast and have a long duration.
As far as defensive talents go, I usually only think abut them for a fighter tank, for the simple reason that there are so many other great talents for all the classes. I prefer the specific defensive talents though; for instance, I hate being knocked prone so I take the extra defense which includes that.
