best class to play 1 and 2 as of 3.7 and are there any cool mods out there?
I'm gonna sit down this weekend and hopefully put a decent dent in this game and then continue on to deadfire sometime in the next week. Wondering what the best MC class is nowadays. I remember Cipher and Paladin use to be good for the chat options they provided, ability to pass a lot o the skill checks, and being a powerful class, however i'm not sure if that's still the rule. As far as the mods go, just wondering if there is a easier way to edit companion stats other than the asset bundle thing. Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

A few observations:

* In PoE 2, you will (re)create your player character from scratch for story reasons. You may choose the same class as before, but the game doesn't force you to do that.

* In Obsidian's forum you can find the topics with the lists that tell about which class, race, culture, background, disposition and stuff leads to the most checks in conversations and scripted interactions. Plus, if you would like to resolve many conflicts peacefully, high Resolve would be recommended, but high Resolve would be a waste on characters that don't care about Deflection defense and other values governed by the Resolve attribute. The highest attribute checks in the game may require very high RES, INT, PER - sometimes two of them as to pass special checks.

* PoE 1 features a Cipher companion and a Paladin companion, and the Paladin companion will reappear in PoE 2 - depending on your actions in PoE 1. If you've got The White March 1+2, there are companions for all classes.

* Many of the classes are "powerful" depending on what you do with your character and whether you play with a capable party or whether you apply solo tactics and strategies. Generally, I would suggest a main player character that doesn't duplicate any NPC companion, so distribute the attributes differently and/or choose another role within your party.

the main thing I"d like to do is be able to solve most of the chat / event options while still being relevant in combat and other parts of the games.

Every class can solve most or all of the chat and event options. There's like 2 key ones that use a cipher dialogue (I can only think of one quest where a cipher is needed to finish it a certain way, and even then it can be done with the companion cipher or your own hireling cipher).

Imo, cipher is one of the best classes for the first game, and one of the worst for the second, unless multi classed or sub classed a specific way (you can easily screw up a cipher build if you don't know what you're doing)

But otherwise the game tries to have dialogue options for every class, so regardless of what class you use, you're still missing out on some dialogue content and options.

Honestly, just do what you feel best you wanna role play as. The great thing about these games is they give enough options and reputations to play as any build you want. You can even go through the game eliminating everyone if you wanted and still finish the game.

My personal favourite class is the wizard, who are decent in the first game, but God tier in the second.
Yeah, during conversation and scripted interactions, the game features many alternative choices for a multitude of player characters. It's not as if you need a single specific protagonist in order to be successful.
It's more a flavor / personal taste type of matter. For example, in a scripted interaction, you may get an option to bend iron bars with physical strength, spiritual strength for caster classes, too, (due to attribute overloading) or simply with an iron bar in your inventory. In other cases, a character of one of the smaller races, such as an Orlan or a dwarf, may get an option to slip through a narrow section while other races can't do that.

However, the game also features a few unique choices, which strictly depend on your player character and/or choices. Cruel disposition as an example. Someone, who plays the benevolent, peaceful hero, won't get those options at all, if a higher disposition rank is needed. One cannot cover everything in a single playthrough.
