Which skills (stealth, athletics etc) should I get for which characters?
Playing a barbarian and have a wizard with me now, which skills should I get? Does my class come into play, like stealth for rogues etc?

It's fun to explore the game and find for yourself but also not a bad idea to get hints. You can rest at an Inn to recharge health and spells and other 1/day things. At an inn you can also hire companions but they aren't written into the game so probably funner to be with the companions you find exploring.

I find Mechanics the most important so somebody on your team should try to put every point they can into mechanics. Personally I have the wizard you have found do that.

Oh and while I mention that I like to set the game options to how I want them so hit esc key and find game options. Now I like to choose my companions skills (but not attributes) and there is an option that allows this. Now you can choose skills/talents/class abilities. At an inn you can also retrain anyone including yourself and it gets more gold the higher level. So I skilled Aloth in Mechanics.

Sometimes you need other things for checks: skills or attributes. So might to push a wall over or athletics to climb it. You can read wiki to find these or just explore the game yourself whatever happens.

My main character is a monk and when he gets wounded that is a resource to him. So I am increasing his stealth so he makes first hit and then draws fire which leads to wounds. Hey someone has to be the front of the party!

Lore can allow to read scrolls or pass story skill checks.

Athletics allows a Second Wind heal every fight and some story skill checks.

Survival allows a variety fo abilities and some story checks. Looks like survivel is good for tanks who anticipate healing. Or if you use lots of consumables. Or if you want to camp before you know a lot of a type of enemy is there increase accuracy against Wilders or Spirits or whatever.

Iirc each class and/or background gets a +1 to certain skills, which is nice for that little bonus early on, but it isnt important in the long run. i think i ran with each character in my party focusing on one of the skills, so i had Eder with a lot of athletics and Aloth with a lot of Lore for scrolls.

i would second that one char should have mechanics, since its realy good for traps, and a few interesting interactions. but all skills are usefull both for playing and in some dialogues. ^^

Ok, so it's not like there's one thats particularly good for my main because its better for conversations or anything? Also, are there any skills that have kind of synergy with something else? Like maybe the stealth character should be a class that has perception so he spots traps before walking in them or something? Are there any considerations like that which would make certain classes and skills a natural pairing?

Mechanics spots traps. My stealthy monk has Mechanics 1 base + 1 monk (edit oops meant scientist background) = 2. He is not a dedicated trap spotter for searching treasure chests and empty areas but maybe he can spot a trap in between some enemies. Not very good/specialized at that but has a shot. I don't know if perception helps Mechanics spot things; I was wondering about that too.

For the story things each of them can apply. Example lore for ancient things, Mechanics for machines, Athletics for athletic things like running climbing? You can't make a character with everything maxed out because if you put points in one thing then not in another.

As for natural pairing I think front line characters benefit from Second Wind from Athletics. A number of classes benefit from Survival. Example is a tank likes damage reduction or benefit to amount when they are healed. Damage dealer likes accuracy against certain enemy/camp example damage against Wilders or Beasts or Spirits. Ranger with gun might like more damage against flanked enemies. Caster might like foot speed to get in right position from Survival.

Perception has no impact on spotting or disarming traps or opening locks or finding secrets. It's all just based on mechanics. For any character that specializes in mechanics (and you only need one in a party), it's best just to assign all points just to that one skill, otherwise you won't keep up with the levels you find as you progress in the game. Note that you can rest to add +1 to it, and you might get lucky enough to find the item that adds +2. I've noticed if it is high enough, you sometimes don't even need to be in stealth mode to spot things, which is nice.

I usually give casters lore, with 1 or 2 in athletics and survival. Fighters get athletics, with some in survival. A rogue or a ranger will get mechanics, with a few in stealth, 1 athletics, and 3 survival.
