On the other hand:
You could position five of your companions above the ramp, then advance with only a frontliner. Once combat starts, retreat up the ramp. It's usable as some sort of bottleneck/chokepoint, if you like that.
You may also keep your party even more far away and pull individual enemies towards you. Use summoning figures to separate 1-2 enemies from the rest, retreat and let only 1-2 chase you.
And since you've mentioned spellcasters, this may be an opportunity for an "all in" approach. Rest at an inn that gives a worthwhile bonus that lasts 2x per rest, also camp in the wilderness to get a bonus for your companions that have learned Survival skill, use support spells, consume food before combat starts, drink a few potions at start of combat.
Aditionally would be what are their constitution at and how high is the DR of the frontline.
What i did was setting up custom formation 1 so my caster are as far away from the action, this feels a lot better than any of the standard setup DON'T FORGET TO PERMA SNEAK. With this setup every time my frontline gets spotted i chose to stop sneaking with my complete frontline so they'll get the face/first aggro or whatever you call the initial aggro, after this i start casting a couple of CC > Prone, Charm, Confuse, Paralyze, Dominate Depending on the situation and also buffing up the frontline with Dot heal or stat buff. But that depends on who you have with you Aloth(Accuracy drop through chill fog, paralyze), Durance (Priest Radiance healing and buff) and Kana(singing), gets some of the heal buff and CC done. Eder and Sagni fox can prone up to 2 times Eder even more if you skill. Having 4 proned enemy or two enemy's proned for 10 sec is helpful to reduce the damage to the frontline.
There is a Paladin companion in one of the side quest in Defiance bay if your frontline only is Eder and the Fox from Sagni.
Edit: I Normaly do Heritage hill as some of the last quest in Defiance bay, there are a lot of easier quest to do, even some fetch quest that will give you a couple of level advantage, which is a lot in Pillars of eternity.
