On my 1st play through , currently level 3 , party of 4 , what is the ideal party size ?
Okay , so I have only just started the game , around 5 hours of game time , just got to grips with things and feeling comfortable with the controls etc.

I was wondering what is the ideal party size and which classes and races would make for a good balanced part...

Currently , I have 1 fighter , 2 x Wizzard and 1 priest.

I presume it would be a good idea to buy level 1 characters at the moment , due to low level funds , as they would level up fairy quickly .

Playing on easy at the moment , but tempted to turn up the difficulty in a few more hours.

Well, you only get +10% XP per missing companion. And throughout the game you gain enough XP to reach max level with more than six companions. Meaning, you may remove/replace companions freely and send removed companions on stronghold adventures to make some XP while your party is completing quests.

Game works best with a full party of six.

You can hire henchmen at any inn. These are companions that you can craft from scratch, just like your main character. Thus, henchmen will often be far better at their job than a companion will, since story companions do not have optimized stats.

That said, first time through the game on Normal or easier mode, I'd take the story companions and do their quests.

I'm on my third Path of the Damned playthrough. I never minmax my hero and always use the NPC companions. So you don't need an ideal party composition to complete the game. However there are some guidelines that make your life easier:

- 1 Tank
- 1 "Support"/Debuff Caster (Priest or Chanter)
- 2x High damage (Anything that goes, DPS Monk, Rogue, Ranger, Cipher, Wizard etc.)

You'll have to play a bit with the Lineup, I found that f.e. Barbarians work really well with a DPS Monk. The Barbarian can easily clean up large groups and the Monk is extremely mobile killing single targets.

I do not know how forgiving Easy is, but on PotD I'd advise against small groups vs Bosses (Dragons etc). Debuffers, distraction tanks and high damage dealers are the three things you really need unless you're a demigod at the game.

Brilliant , thank you all for your advice :)

If you hire henchmen at the inn - they will be one level lower than your main character. Story companions will be roughly the same level as you.

Stat distribution is not extremely important unless you go for a very specific build. And minmaxing
is not required at all. Even more so on easy difficulty. Choose story companions for their quests and banter. Just progress through the story - very soon you will have enough to choose from.
