Buy vanilla or definitive edition with expansions?
Hi, i am wondering if it is worth the extra cost for the expansions. I have never played poe. I enjoyed dos 1 and 2 a lot so i am pretty sure i will enjoy this

Expansions are worth it for content vs price, but if you don't enjoy the game, then I wouldn't get it.

This game is really nothing like divinity original sin. The combat in divinity original sin 1 (never played the second yet) is waaay more fun than pillars of eternity imo, so if you're expecting more of that, think again.

The combat isn't turn based in Poe, it's real time with pause (you pause with spacebar to issue orders then unpause to watch the orders play out.) If you're really good or with the right party composition, you don't need to pause, but you're playing on harder difficulties with a team if wizards and priests you're gonna be stopping combat a lot to reissue new orders and change tactics.

So if you like that more or not is up to you, personally I'm a turn based kinda guy but real time with pause has its moments too.

That being said, what this game excels at over original sin is story and dialogue and roleplaying in general.
There is a pretty complex dialogue system with different reputations you build based on your dialogue responses (as diplomatic, deceptive, benevolent, clever, aggressive, etc) and the world and npcs react to your character differently based on reputations and what you say to them.

The story and world are much darker than original sin, more serious and deeper. The character versatility is way higher, the amount of different builds you can have is astronomical.
The game is also much longer than the first divinity original sin game.

The game is about 60% combat and 40% dialogue choices and world building through decisions you've made.

So if that sounds fun to you, then get the expansions, between the two they add about as much as the base game (though I'd say the expansions are about 80/20 combat/dialogue.)

If you're thinking after what I've said you might be iffy on the game, then just get the base game to see if you like it.

I love this game. If you like isometric cRPGs you will love it. It is well done albeit a bit text heavy. Although it is realtime, the combat involves a lot of strategy, knowledge of spells, and knowledge of enemy types and their strengths/weaknesses. However, I do not like the White March explanisons. It is simply just too much filler and battles. I think the vanilla game is more than enough. However, I have been playing it on my 3rd run through so I can get burnt out easily from the vanilla world plus the DLC world.

The DLC is also not well intergrated into the vanilla world. It takes away from the pacing of the game. Yes, I know you can travel back and forth between the worlds but it does drag on the pacing nevertheless.
