This or Tyranny?
I am a CRPG noob and never really liked them but I wanted to stop being so ignorant and try to play one. Since Obisidian are the masters of the genre, whats the one you would recommend? Is there on thats more friendly to beginners than the other or doesnt it really matter? I'd probably like to get into Pillars because Part 2 is on the way so I might as well dip into a new franchise, right? Also I the Pillars chapter in Blood, Sweat & Pixels really woken my interest.

To get into the genre in general Pillars is better suited. Personally, I recommend Pillars over Tyranny anyways, but that's a matter of taste. Tyranny offers an interesting viewpoint as you play for the bad guys.
Pillars however tries to be a spiritual successor to the CRPG classics Baldurs Gate & Icewind Dale and it mostly succeeds in that. Also it has a way longer running time of about 40 hours (double it with the 2 DLCs).
It starts off a bit slow, so if you go for it don't get thrown off by that. I highly recommend watching the ACG Pillars of Eternity review. It's spoilerfree & very well made.

Enter "Tyranny" in the forum search box. The general question has come up and been discussed plenty of times before, which may give you some worthwhile feedback.

About Obsidian. The team that has made Tyranny is not the same that has made Pillars of Eternity. I think the rules and balancing of PoE are superior than Tyranny. Tyranny is dumbed down and messed up at the same time. With all skills being class-neutral, but NPC companions getting their own unique talent trees. With cooldowns and insane healing from remote leaders in places not shown on the screen. With pre-combat spell casting and highly repetitive combat, which mostly turns into a dps vs. healing race.

Pillars of Eternity - be sure to get The White March DLC, both parts - offers so much more replayability than Tyranny. Tyranny feels incomplete with a sudden end. The only worthwhile DLC is B-a-s-tard's Wound, which also adds personal quests for your companions in addition to a larger dungeon and some bits, but the sudden end of the base game remains.

*sigh* it is not franchise... *sigh* but if you wish to wait for Pillars 2, do it, Pillars 2 looks more promising then Pillars I

Anyway, I would recommend totaly different games. But If you really interested in those two. Play both.

Pillars got better story. Tyranny is better game. Both games are uncompleted due money shortage or greed in different ways.

According to steam you own neither game and all your constant sighing all over the place you seem bitter over Obsidian games...you're probably not the best source of info in this case. And yes, PoE is a franchise lol. This guy.

To the OP, PoE is a traditional party based crpg slighty tweaked from DnD rulesets, I'd go for PoE over ♥♥♥♥♥♥

Pillars is way better imo. Better combat, deeper lore and more bang for your buck in terms of game length as well as replayability. Other notes are better sidequests and larger zones.

Tyrany does tell a more coherent story though.

@vinzi would you recomoned This and the DLC or this and tyranny (no dlc)

Thanks !

If you play these games for story then get pillars+tyranny. White march storyline is pretty bad.

If you are mainly in it for the gameplay then pillars+dlc.

If you check out my Steam, you'll see I have more hours on Tyranny, but I'd still recommend PoE+expansions to a newcomer. Tyranny is more specifically fun for those of us who enjoyed non-Baldur's Gate RPGs of the late 90s like Fallout 1/2 and Planescape: Torment, which had lots of choice and consequence. The combat probably isn't as good or deep as PoE, which is much more in line with Baldur's Gate 2. BG2 was much more popular (if less "sophisticated") than rhe other 90s games I mentioned, and for this and many other reasons I think most people would enjoy PoE + expansions more.

Pillars is boring and excruciatingly slow paced compared to Tyranny. I recommend Tyranny.

I recommend Pillars of Eternity and expansions.

See you.

Pillars if you want a huge amount of playtime, Tyranny if you want a more condenced, slightly simpler experiance.

Pillars is more traditional story setting(and better) but starts much slower. Tyranny takes a odd spin on it and places you in the role of a person trying to adapt and stay useful in a dark regiem. Tosses you right into it and end just as abruptly.
Psyadin Mar 31, 2018 @ 5:47am
Tyranny has many issues, i loved that they tried a bunch of new things in it, and most of them worked, but as others mentioned the story ends very abruptly, its really short and has many other issues, PoE is a much more complete game, but for a first timer, Original Sin 2 would by far be the first game to introduce you to the genre.
If possible, I would trade in Tyranny for a $0.50 Gamestop Giftcard... that game ended like every crappy Xbox 360/PS3-era RPG I ever played; quick and remorseless, not to mention just as soon as it gets fun

EDIT: steam lets you say crappy but not the more popular term that starts with "sh" lol
