Can't save.
So, I've made it to Valewood twice. Both times I've saved my game and backed out. The next time I open the game my saves don't exist. Wtf? Does anyone else have this problem?

I do. My situation is even worse. I lost almost all my saves.
Local saves or Steam Cloud?

If local saves, what do you see in the \Users\USERNAME\Saved Games\Pillars of Eternity\ folder?

As some players have encountered lost saves and others have never had any lost saves, I think the developers have never figured out the problem. In some known cases, there have been anti-virus solutions that interfered and file access permission problems, too.

So last night I exited the game, re-opened it and only had the option to start a new game, no saves. I posted this then went to bed. Woke up this morning read the comments, opened the save directory and saw a bunch of saves, opened the game and they're all there... Did the game just feel like screwing with me? Strange stuff, maybe opening the directory pleased the gaming gods or something. Thx btw.

Yea i had this problem, what worked for me was to turn off steam cloud syncronization. Hopefully this bug will get fixed for those who want to play on multiple devices

This game has a terrible sort system when it comes to their save files. On normal mode, the first three files are generally for autosaves. Your manual saves start from the 4th slot. Additionally if you have created several different characters, the game will make collapsable tree.. so initially you might not see any save files but you will see the different chracter names you made and clicking on them generally brings up the saves made under that characters progression.

One thing I have noticed is that often enough the UI lags. At certain points it takes almost a minute to load up all the save files in the window. If you have a lot saves then it gets gradually longer.

Ok, I have it figured out. I have to turn off my firewall(Mcafee) before starting the game then all my saves are present. Wierd that Obsidian would let this go unchecked for so long, it sounds like there's alot of players with the same issue. Thx again everybody for the help.

I am once again back to no saves. firewall off, steam syncronization off. Any other advice?

I got nothin' else really. The firewall thing worked for me. Have you checked to make sure your save files are there?

In the official tech support forum (where players can report bugs) you can find a couple of topics about missing saves, but do you find any topics where the definite cause of the problem has been determined? In some cases, external software has disturbed the game, but if no fix has been found other than stopping the other software, there's nothing to ship as an update.

for me it was zonealarm firewall. If i closed it completley then loaded the game and my saves were available to load. I haven't figured out yet how to make it let me load without disabling yet though...working on it !
