They both have the word "sneak" but that dosent mean much.
Read the description for sneak attacks again.
Sneak attack is triggered when the enemy is flanked (i.e when you're not striking from the front) or disabled (stunned, blinded, paralized etc.) and at the start of the battle.
backstab is the passive you are looking for, it boosts damage when you are invisible.
Stealth is the out of combat invisibility, you can backstab once at the start of the battle with it if you were in stealth when ingaging.
Invisibility is the combat stealth, you get a per rest talent as a rogue to make you invisible in battle, otherwise you can use potions, items or a wizard can make you invisible.
As Sajah explained, there is a backstab talent, but I would not bother with it personally since you can only use it from stealth and this equates to aprox once per encounter in practice with a damage increase of only a measly 50% (as opposed to AD&D backstabs of x3, x4 etc) so it is no one-shot assasination tool.
The one half decent application of backstab is with a gun from range in stealth at the start of combat. Guns do a lot of damage per shot so the 50% bonus is a bit nicer and the rogue can execute the attack from a safe distance. On PotD this can amount to two or three pips off a dangerous opponent with impunity.
But there are other rogue talents that give far better value IMO.
For example Deathblows which enhances Sneak Attack to deliver 100% additional damage if the rogue's victim is disabled by two or more Sneak Attack qualifying disables. Not only is that twicew the backstab damage bonus but it can be triggered repeatedly and freuqently during the course of every encounter.
Other stand out talents for the rogue are Dirty Fighting and Reckless Assualt which convert hits to crits and increase accuracy (which also translates to more crits) respectively. Again these talents work all the time and result in a constant stream of additional damage output.
Finishing Blow which is really usefull finishing off boss enemies is worth a mention. Massive damage against high HP opponents already wounded and you get three per rest. Things like dragons don't like this ability, they don't like it at all.
