I genreally put Kana on either Summoner or Support script/Defensive. By default all AI's are set to defend self which is basically the same as passive but will retaliate if attacked. So even in combat unless you manually click on a target Kana will just stand there not providing any support or help. You will also have to manaually set the AI script each time if you tend to swtich companions around frequently. For somereason it reverts back to the default settings when you re-recruit them into your party.
I am not sure if this really does anything but you can take a look at how the verses are set up. Generally in most cases you have to equip the new chants you unlocked onto his book so he will activate them in battle. Each of these verses has a number next to it signifying its order so I think it helps if chants are set up in order of 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc. Kana will activate them sequentially in battle. There are higher level verses that function like spells and summons which need certain level of verses to be completed before being available to use. Sort of like how Monks or Ciphers build up wounds and focus over time, there is a number that signifys this on a potrait and having the available amount will allow you to use these summons. .
Also a slight caution when using the summoner script. it can start working against you on higher levles as Kana will indescrimantely summon the first thing he can when he has enough verses. That means higher level summons will not really be used by the AI. So at points you will have to manually make him summon ogres or higher entities. Also auto summoning doesn't set a target to acttack, your summons will just stand next to Kana unless there is an enemy close by and while you can strategically spawn allies at a distance, the script doesn't make use of this and instead will always spawn allies next to your chanter, requiring targets to be set manually to attack.
Else, the only Chanter bug I've run into late is two times "Chant A" appearing in a chanter's list of chants. Editing the chants made it go away, then reappeared when I also added Kana to the party, and I had to edit the chants for Kana too.
It's not a game breaker or anything, they're certainly useful and all but I'm not overly fond of micromanaging my characters so I sort of just don't use them at all...
When his chants work they occur as he's attacking, that still works as it should.
