Is it worth moving the game to an SSD?
My SSD isn't big enough for more than 2 or 3 games. Anyone here try PoE on both an SSD and HDD? Is the performance (specifically, average load time) improved enough to warrant a move?

dude, this game has the minimum and recommened specs of a 2008 AAA... if you're having trouble with it, I sincerely recommend getting a new PC

not to mention the "huge" 14 GB of space this game takes up lol they sell TBs of storage for like $20, slap it on your computer

I guess you haven't played PoE? Loading times are an issue. And my PC is just fine. I have four hard drives, but only one of them is an SSD, which is small because it's only for the OS and the one or two games that have problems if they're anywhere but C:\.

Anyway, I moved the game to my SSD and there was zero difference in loading times, so I guess it's an issue with Unity itself. Ah well.

yea, unity is a horrible engine, you could buy a license for it rn then slap together some assets and finish your first game in a couple weeks

Unity isn't a horrible engine at all. It's the people abusing it to make a quick buck that are the problem.

I don't really believe there's such a thing as a bad engine... it's all about what you do with it. Neverwinter Nights 2 is one of the worst, least-optimized games out there. I've got a moderately high-end gaming PC by today's standards, and I *still* have performance issues with it. CD Projekt Red took that same engine and made The Witcher with it, which to this day is one of the best-optimized games I've seen. Runs like a charm on a toaster.

I'm not sure what, specifically, is going on with Unity here. Maybe it's auto-saving at every load screen? Maybe it's checking over the save file (which, in PoE, is big)? Wastleand 2 and the Shadowrun games also use Unity, without any comparable issues.

The load time is a problem caused by the auto saves; as long as you progress, it will increase the load times more and more. There's a mod to disable it.

When the game first came out i noticed the load times for transitions and it did seem long, and i did have a ssd. however now im using a hd, and i have a new processor/ram/mb and the load times seem pretty insignificant or noticable.

To answer your question: Yes, upgrading from a conventional hard drive to a solid state will markedly reduce your asset load times.

I don't yet know whether there's an improvement going from SSD to M.2 SSD.

It's been four months. It's highly unlikely they're still in need of advice.

In practice, I would say no.

I went from a Samsung Pro 850 500GB, to a Pro 960 1TB version, and there's zero difference in games, so I would not advocate for people to spend their money on nVME disks for gaming. It's a pure epeen thing.

Have you tried that to confirm it? The savegame files starts below 1 MB and grow slowly as you discover new areas. At the end of the game expect 11-12 MB or so. They are .ZIP archives. You can look into them.

The game's loading times are due to the game excessive file accesses when loading new areas.

Or you could just have read the second post in the thread, where I stated that I moved the game to my SSD, and load times were unaffected.

I was trying to be diplomatic.
