Depends. Personally I think absorbing his knowledge is the best.

SPOILER

There's a secret area in the Endless Paths that is only accessible if you absorb him.

I usually release it.. because anything else is kind of evil, and i'm bad at being evil xD

I finally decided to release him. My figther is a good figther, passionate with honest tendancy. Better let him go and have more prestige on my new castle !

Haha. Didn't mean to put doubt in you. Honestly, from a role-playing perspective, it's best to do what you want to. So releasing is definitely a good option if that's what you think your character would do.
You prefer more spoilers than in the linked Wiki page?

It is more fun and interesting to do what you think your character would do and then see what might come out of it in the long term.

Yeah, I think this game is built in that way you are supposed to do what you think your character would do. My main character is druid that value freedom of all living creatures above everything else, so it was obvious for me to release his soul. But If I would have decided to play an evil guy who is only interested getting power, then I would have absorbed his knowledge.

Thats how I play.. Current playthrough, Mountain Dwarf Paladin, of the Bleak Walkers.. Aggressive, Cruel, ruthless, and have been enjoying playing a mean Paladin.. (Mean, not evil.. Hes still a Paladin)

In my case she was a ranger who stumbled ears deep into a situation that was too much for her and I played the first time of the game happily bumbling from one situation to another because she really did not know where things would be leading to.

And used the *notes* section to write up a IC diary of sorts, commenting on the game events out of the view of my character.

In this game Paladin is fanatic about those things that order likes. I just love it that they fixed that bit stupid D&D Paladin where you were forced to play good guy now you have multiple options to choose from. You can still play the good Paladin if you like, but there is still other options too.

That sounds fun. I never thought of that. But, as a writer, that's a cool idea.

I've got to say, Bleak Walker Paladin seems to be the most common class I've come across on Let's Plays or other online video playthroughs. Even though it's not a D&D game, I feel like Obsidian definitely paid attention to complaints people had about D&D over the years (probably their own complaints too, haha).

As you gain ranks in Cruel/Aggressive disposition, you gain further opportunities to be cruel or deceptive to receive various permanent bonuses. That's an interesting role-playing path and not possible with the other Paladin choices.

Yeah, absolutely. I'm aware. I was just pointing out it's extremely common for a reason: it's unique and uncommon in most other RPGs. Or if it is available in other games, it's not usually a viable option as relates to story.
