Mechanics increases your detection abilities, not stealth.
Nope. Perception determines combat accuracy and some scripted interactions. Mechanics determines at what distance you find hidden objects/traps (as well as your ability to disarm said traps), and lockpicking.
Also, if your mechanics skill is high enough you actually don't have to enter stealth mode. But in this case, you will probably need to.
Playing the rogue is least fun, but maximum utility. If one takes wound binding and two weapon fighting one can even use the torch as fire baton and still get all the jobs done. Sadly the game, due stronghold demands, isn't much for the solitary rogue...
I'll reiterate: Perception does not affect your ability to find secrets/traps. It is likely your rogue found things easily due to its naturally high mechanics (and I assume you continued to increase your mechanics on level ups - either way perception does not affect this).
Perception has no impact on the difficulty check for finding hidden objects, but with high perception you can detect hidden objects without stealth (it effects the spotting radius) given that your mechanics skill is high enough.
You don't need that to be the case. Even without the Perception, a high mechanics skill will help you spot items without being in scouting mode. Spotting radius is determined by mechanics.

"The higher a party member's Mechanics skill, the larger the distance in which it will detect traps and hidden objects, like stashes, switches or items. With a low skill these may only be detected while in Scouting Mode, where higher levels will reveal some of them without scouting, depending e.g. on the trap's difficulty level."
