Supported Controllers / Having Controller Issues?
If your controller is not working...
Some quick troubleshooting things to try first:
  • Do you have any other controllers plugged in? Sometimes different controllers don't play well with each other. Try unplugging all other controllers. Xbox 360 controllers are really bad about keeping other controllers from being recognized unless the 360 controller(s) is plugged in last.
  • Are there multiple modes (e.g., D vs X on a Logitech controller or PC vs WiiU on a Mayflash adapter)? Try both.
  • Try both starting the game wit the controller plugged in and try plugging the controller in after the game has already been launched.
  • If you're using an adapter made to handle multiple controllers, it's likely only one of the ports works (I'm looking at you, Mayflash). Be sure to try each port.
  • If you're on Windows, have you tried using x360ce? If not, scroll down a little bit to find instructions.
  • If you're trying to get multiple PS4 controllers to work on PC, you'll need to download DS4Windows[ds4windows.com].

If your controller is still not working...
and is not one of the ones listed below, please email gamepads@brawlhalla.com with the following info (please do not email me before trying the above troubleshooting):
  • A link to the exact controller you're using (preferably one where it can be purchased).
  • If you're using an adapter, a link to that, too.
  • When you try to use it, are none of the inputs registering or are you getting incorrect inputs? If none are registering, we can go about adding support for it with your help. If the inputs are incorrect, we can do our best figure out what's going on, but support may not be possible at this time.
  • Are you on Mac or PC?
  • If there are multiple versions of your controller (i.e., one for Xbox and one for PS3), which version are you using?
  • Does your controller show up in the customize controls screen? If so, what does the game call it?[i.imgur.com] Note that this screen will refer to your buttons as if you're using an Xbox 360 controller regardless of what you're actually using.
Expect a reply (with additional instructions for controllers that aren't registering at all) within 1-2 business days.

Getting x360ce to Work (Windows)
  • If you're trying x360ce because the game currently recognizes your controller as the wrong type of controller and the buttons are all mixed up, it might be best to first go into the controls menu and disable the controller[i.imgur.com] that it thinks you're using. This step is not always necessary, but it sounds like sometimes it is. If you've already tried x360ce and are now coming back to trying this, be sure to remove all "x360ce" and "xinput" files from your Brawlhalla directory first.
  • Download the executable from here[www.x360ce.com]. 32-bit should be fine.
  • Unzip the download and copy x360ce.exe into the same folder as Brawlhalla.exe. Example directory path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Brawlhalla
  • Run x360ce.exe. It may ask you for permission to create a filed called "xinput1_3.dll". This is fine. Let it create it.
  • Go to the Game Settings[i.imgur.com] tab.
  • Select Brawlhalla.exe and change the XInput file to 32-bit 9.1 like this[i.imgur.com]. Unselecting the default option may cause x360ce to crash. That's fine. Just let it quit and then reopen it. Some users have reported that these settings did not work, but others did. This is what worked for me, but you may need to just fiddle with it. I had another user report that his didn't work until he had all of the 32-bit options selected.
  • Now you should be good to go. Special thanks to Costy for figuring out the setting.
  • If you are using a Mayflash adapter for GameCube controllers, you have to use x360ce if you want multiple controllers to work. You will also probably have to update a few of the buttons because the default settings might not be correct.
  • You do not need to have x360ce.exe running when you launch Brawlhalla.

Getting the Steam Controller to Work Like an Xbox 360 Controller in Windows
We just recently got our hands on the new Steam controller and plan on adding native support for it, but in the meantime, here's how you can get it to work like an Xbox 360 controller:
  • Go into Big Picture Mode[i.imgur.com]
  • Go to your Library and select Brawlhalla
  • Select "Manage Game"
  • Select "Configure Controller"
  • Select "Browse Configs"
  • Select "Recommended"
  • Select "Gamepad With Camera Controls"
  • Select "Done"
Your controller will now show up in-game as an Xbox 360 controller. The left pad will behave like a dpad, and you can swipe the right pad to taunt. You can rebind the other buttons in-game the same way you would a 360 controller.

General Info on Supported Controller Lists
  • "Confirmed" means I have personally tested it. "Reported" means that someone has claimed it works, but we haven't tested it personally.
  • It seems like any wired 3rd party (e.g. PDP, etc) controller for the Xbox 360 or Xbox One will work. I will keep this list updated as we add support.
  • Note that different controllers do not always work together, but sometimes it does help if you plug one or more of them in after launching the game. If a controller is listed below and is not working for you, make sure you try it with no other controllers plugged in.

Windows (Confirmed)

Windows (Reported)

Mac (Confirmed)
  • Microsoft Xbox 360 Wired Controller. Requires TattieBogle driver[tattiebogle.net]. WARNING: TattieBogle not entirely recommended. Can make the game feel unresponsive (quick button taps can get missed), and is almost unplayable with multiple controllers.
  • Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Controller w/ adapter[www.amazon.com]. Probably requires TattieBogle.
  • Logitech F310 ('D' mode)
  • Retro Link GameCube Style USB Wired Controller[www.amazon.com]
  • Playstation 3 Controller via Bluetooth[www.mactrast.com]
  • Pro Ex for PS3[smile.amazon.com]
  • Xbox One Controller (may or may not require TattieBogle)
  • Sony Playstation 4 controller (just plug it in with the charger cable and it's good to go).
