Down light with the hammer (the stomp) will put your opponent just slightly up in the air and disable them for a split second so you can do the up tilt attack throw. Great for if they're running at you and you're on the edge.
the katars have a good combo where you use up light to launch them into the air (must be very close though) and then use the directional power air attack that is also a force move to launch players.
A good combo with the guns is your down power air attack to bounce them off the ground and then immediately follow up with the directional air power to finish them off.
another good combo is the two air hammer throws. first do the directional air power to grab and throw them down then immediately follow up with the down light air to send them right back up. The bonus to this one is if they dodge your directional Air you can usually get a quick down light throw to punish them for that.
Those few should help you out quite a bit. Don't ever just focus on one weapon. learn to at least us both weapons of your desired character so that you can switch up and not be as predictable. in all actuality though it's really just a matter of playing with each weapon and trying to do cool things with it. Don't button mash and try to see what all the directions and things do looking for things that can be combos. Play some single player tournament to go for high scores on every character. This will give you plenty of bot practice to learn different combos. The best part about it too is it's actually accomplishing something too as you're going for high scores.
You can also use standing light with the lance to chain into most lance signature moves. It's not a true combo but can often catch people off guard.
