How do I 2v2 online?

If I am playing this game online with a friend, is there any way for us to possibly challenge another team of 2? If not that would be a really cool implementation.

Yes it is possible. Go to custom, make one. Then proceed on open the game settings, put the mode u want, with teams and there u go.

U can press B to change team color if u want to be with someone specific.

Right, it seems that you can either play with your friends, or play with random people online but you can't play with both your friends and random people online. Is there any way of doing both?

You can't at the moment (although I assume it will be a feature in the future?) but you can send you server's 4 letter code out to random people and get them to join - but that's the best you can do at the moment.

I beleave it's possible with some magic third party networking. Ofcourse this is just for now, later their will be friend support features.

It is possible to go with 2 players on the same machine in a online match.

So, with a third party app, or some magic, you can create a LAN or VPN connection, setup the connecter as a controller user. Make the app, or magic, stream your screen to your friend, and I guess you're good to go.
hint: steam has support for such things. (VPN)

Setting up VPN Connection, the host as the one whos gonna run the game, the other one has to connect to the host the 'workspace'.

Then in steam:
Click on the tab 'steam' in the top left corner -> Click settings.
Goto homestreaming, and normally you should see your friend in the devices list if he connected through VPN.
Make a stream to your friend, and play!
This sometimes doesn't work, so don't worry about it to much.
