What's also helpful when playing with a PS4 controller is moving dodge from the large shoulder buttons to a small one. For example, I use R1 for dodges and L1 for throws. R1 takes less time to press than R2, which really improved my doding. :)
And in case you haven't done yet: You should also disable "quick attack picks up". This gives you more control when unarmed near a weapon, because you can then decide if you want to attack or pick up the weapon with the throwing button.
I hope this helps!
I never used a keyoard, but disabling "press up to jump" seems to be the consensus. For a neutral attack after moving sidewards I'd quickly press up then as well, it works the same way. I struggled when I changed my settings as well, but it doesn't take too long to adapt and in the long run it's worth it. And you can always practice new settings in experimental. Also, you don't have to use space to jump, you could use any key you like (as long as it's not "up"). Please be aware that I'm not a very good player, these are just my opinions. However, many good players seem to share them.
