Redeem it ingame, go to shop, bottom option. It's their mistake saying it's some steam key

There are those so called "metadev" skins you get for meeting an developer at events. (met a dev)

This is the reason I started to play the game in the first place, randomly getting handed it by an dev while I watched an showmatch I joined for like 2 minutes.

Well, Metadev doesn't really count. I was referring to mass key giveaways for a skin, which as far as I know has only happened this one time, but I feel like alienware has given out something for Brawlhalla before... Perhaps it was closed beta keys if it wasn't another skin giveaway.

you can cheat the system and make a bunch of accounts then keep claiming the keys and sell it

No you can’t actually. It has either a cookie or local IP address checksum to keep you from doing that. Usually you can only get two or less before it locks you out on a device. Also, no one is going to buy them anytime soon considering how many were given out. Also, selling free codes or codes in general is scummy. Don’t be a scumbag.
