The whole duration of the dodge you want to use for the gravity cancel is less than half a second. Giving you half a second more would mean you'd be long past the dodge you want to cancel.

Sounds like you just need more practice.
I played at least the first 800 hours on a controller. Used two different kinds and one was only slighty better than the other, and both where inferior to the handling reliability of keyboard. You'll have to put in some effort to learn, but it is worth it.
Onto keyboards; membrane and other low end keyboards can get flooded. This can cause you to move and act in weird or unwanted ways. Look for keyboards with wasd on seperate circuits or invest in a mechanical if you want to avoid this.
That said I love mah mushy keybords! I enjoy my membrane, it's easy on my delicate and dainty fingers.
Fastest button clicking in the world? Extreme button clicking contest???
The speed of this game is already 10x Street Fighter 2 arcade...

If you want actual skill, I suggest you find something that won't be depended on connection.
