Why you shouldn't take trash talk personally

It's not about you. It's about the trash talker. If they say you're trash, or cancer, or ♥♥♥, or even ez, they're not talking about you. They are inadvertedly talking about themselves. This is what's called projection in psychology. We often deny negative (or even sometimes positive) traits in ourselves and ascribe them in others because recognizing these traits in ourselves make us uncomfortable for varying reasons.

But anyways. I find it funny when I get creamed by someone and they call me trash. I used to feel like "oh what a piece of♥♥♥♥♥♥ I lost all respect for their skills now that they're being arrogant about winning." While I still think it is arrogant, I don't fault them because being a sore winner might just be the best they can get in life. These are insecure people who get psychological pleasure from appearing dominant over others.

Likewise when I win, and someone trash talks me, I used to want to engage and say "well if I suck so much and I beat you, what does it say about you?" It's kind of the same thing. They're saying I suck, but really they're denying their own inabilities to play well and ascribing it to me even though I won. It's another form of projection due to some serious sadness. A sadness that only doing well in a video game can quell, which in itself makes sense since it's euphoric to win in a skill based game like Brawlhalla compared to something that's left up to chance like slot machines.

So yeah, learning about the theory of projection, I'm starting to see it as more than a theory. It seems pretty valid as I often find myself being tempted to trash talk if I'm having a bad day and want to seek some catharsis through putting someone else down. Not anymore though, I recognize it's just crap happening within me I'm trying to stuff away whenever I feel like wanting to put someone else down.

Why spread more negativity especially in an activity where you're supposed to have fun with other people?

This is actually a great post, I do agree that maybe this doesn't apply to all cases, since we don't all feel the same and do the same or say the same for the same reason, but it was still a very interesting read, and interesting topic. I'll sure look more into it.

Oh dont you worry......trash talk or not this weekend ive got 57th person "my friends" and even strangers beaten up by me IRL for being ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ in the game. And the count will go on untill they stop thinking like kids......cause this community is built up from some retarded corners of world. DE is stupid if they dont do anything so i dont care what they think. I'll keep the count on beating till i hear the clock tower ticking stop......and for those so called trash talkers they better watch it. Call me mad...call me W.E you like.......i came to this game to have fun and peace not listen to your ♥♥♥♥♥♥ familly behaviour!

Lmfao SUCH RAGE! But yeah, glad you brought that up. It usualy is just a manifestation dysfunctional family behaviour leaking into online behaviour. Like if you have a family of sports dads that take peewee hockey too seriously like it's the NHL and put pressure on their toddler to perform. Usually results in over competitive grown ups who don't learn to just enjoy games for fun. It's gotta be personal. It's gotta be about winning.

Implying people to not mess around with you will end in people messing around with you. It's common sense, like asking :''Don't throw snowballs at me'' While being outside in the snow talking to people who weren't even paying attention to you.

Some people might feel better after reading your... rant? Will it work to stop people doing what they're doing now? Nope. You're asking for a reaction at this point.

nOnOnO. In a 2v2 where your opponent is a duo of friends. They'll want to have fun.
What is funny in gaming and especially ranked? pissing your opponent off after winning.

Still avoods trash if that's what you don't want. And about reporting with more consequences. You can abuse this. Eventually ending up in people getting banned for doing nothing.
