Ive got first 6 songs to S rank on keyboard. It is possible, but time consuming :)

I kept the default controls, which are pretty abysmal, and just kept replaying until I got to A rank for the rewards. You will build muscle memory by replaying/practice so you will get better at it faster than you think, but it still takes too long and is not really fun or worth it.

There is a reason why guitar hero doesn't have 20 keys. As with every single minigame, if you don't have fun with it then just skip it or it will damage your enjoyment of the game.

I have a controller but I found it is easier on keyboard.

I have controller, but me too clumsy to get high ranks. Got "A" relatively easy on the first song but can't score above "B" on the second one (where Tifa performs before audience).
Keyboard controls looks even harder.

Ended up writing a small script that samples certain areas of the screen and if they are orange enough - sends corresponding keystrokes. Just got an "*" rank.

Love the mini-game though and will play on gamepad for fun.

oof... I got A for all of them first try ...wait until cosmo canyon. Cant get above a B, even asked my daughter who plays piano to try and nope

Got to Cosmo Canyon finally. The script miserably failed. I had to tweak keypress duration from 0.25 to 0.07s (to reliably discern last two very short notes on the same key), move sampled coordinates a bit inwards the wheel and slightly tweak color thresholds. Don't know which one was crucial, but got Star rank here as well.
