Grey Goo

Mods and grey goo
after hearing that his game is true to the old school west wood games however I have not found a concrete response from a dev about mod tools. Will they allow the modifcation of units and buildings even going so far as letting people use custom models and assets? I would buy this in a heartbeat if I can mod this game to my hearts content for offline ai skirmish and to a lesser extent for multiplayer.

Would be awesome if a Tiberian Dawn/Sun mod could be made on this engine.

I'd also love to mod Grey Goo. Either I'd rename the Hailstorm or make it shoot 10 projectiles per second with a lowered damage (to even out the faster attack speed).

Petroglyph made modding impossible. They've even encrypted the files required to mod. I've tried using a MEG file editor but the game simply refuses to launch with any alterations to files. This is why I've requested a refund.

Why would they grant you a refund? They didn't plan to make the game moddable neither did they announce so. Grey Goo is a great game without modding - it'd gain more replay value with modding, that's all.
And of course they didn't want anyone to mess around with the game files due to their online match making.

that does not justify acting like paranoid ♥♥♥♥♥ and locking offline mod ability or even an offline version at all....and cant even pretend that it stops piracy of the game because if I could go right now and find a working torrent of legacy of the void for star craft I sure as hell could find one for grey goo. I honestly belive that petroglyph is a giant bag of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥ heading the way of EA. I mean they have no excuse to not let us mod the product we bought, other then for tournaments and really do you honestly expect this game to get enough people to do tournaments that would have cheating issues?

That's their problem, not yours... I don't see your point, really. Maybe next time before you buy a game you verify if the devs mean the game to be moddable to any extent before flaming around in the community.
Yes, I'd like to mod too for grey goo, but it's their game, not yours. They decide what you can do with it, not you. You bought a license to play the game, you didn't buy the game itself. If in that license modding was not included, it wasn't. Expecting there would without them explicitly saying so is just wrong. Maybe they head in the same direction as EA, but that's their business problem, not yours.

I didnt buy it, used it during hte free period and glad I didnt. Your argueing that I expect them to cater to my whim yes? Because im well aware that just because I explcitly want something doesnt mean it will happen. BUT these forums exsist for people to talk about the game, for good or for worse, they are allowed to express their opinions and thoughts. As I have done, I dont think I am "flaming" other then calling out hte devs for being lazy and falling prey to the "muh piracy protection!!!" niche that all the DRM forcing companies are doing lately, and that is why im here ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ in the first place is because my words wont ever be heeded by them, yet I feel something must be said.

This comment I like better because it is sort of constructive criticism. The first one wasn't and that's not the way to go(o) :steamhappy:

But anyway, we're getting off-topic here. Fact is they don't allow it, whether this is good or bad is up to them.

Generally I agree with you: Modding allows for so much more and longer lasting fun than getting it as is, but we can't change that.

Modding is limited. Terrain Editor allows to make custom maps with custom assets. Campaign Editing allows using Clickscript with maps. The scripts allow for a bit more modding, custom campaign maps only (versus custom multiplayer maps). Health values can be changed on units and starting conditions (select intitial spawn of units & structures, tech upgrades, etc.) not sure about stats and how extensive the clickscript can be used to modify the game.

Custom units, custom skins for units and structures, and other modding aspects might be possible but I think it would involve "building the whole game with modified files" via the runassestprocess.bat in the Editor Files. It would be cool to have those options. There was mention of considering implementing a "microwars" option (customizable battle scenario game option), no real idea about progress or if even being developed.

Be more specific with the request for mods: what do you want to be able to do?

The modeling for the Terrain Editor requires a 3dsMax plugin, is it possible to get a plugin for Blender?

I think there will be more players join this game if mod tool is added to this game.Mod base on modren combat ,may be attractive:steamhappy:
