So then just allow them in unranked play or skirmish mode. At the least they should allow them for FFA matches where balance isn't really a concern. I can see them maybe not wanting to do a 4v4.
Scouting becomes literal as you first have to figure out where the other players are before you can even see what they might be doing. There is no sending a scout to a predetermined location where you know the enemy is.
Your build has to be generic and flexible enough since you may not know for a while what others are doing, and your going to have to fight against varying strategies.
The fight tends to be less of a base rush too. Yeah you can base rush someone, but then another player could just walk right into your wide open base and do the same. The fight tends to start with expansion bases.
That's old school RTS goodness before E-sports took over.
Eight players on a Single-player skirimsh? The way to do this might be to make a custom campaign map. One player HQ, three AI HQ, and four AI non-HQ starts. You can have four teams and might even be able to base-build in-editor to give the non-HQ a base. If anything, it might be a way to get more than 800 units on a map just to see how the game runs.
If you just want random spawns for skirmish, you can place any number (that fit without overlap) of player starts -on any map, just edit it. Pick your start and let the AI randomly select from what is left. It is limited to four players.
If you figure out how to get the scripting to work for custom campaign maps, publish the map and post your script in the workshop forums or in the notes for the map.
