I just think it would be a truly GOOD ending, which would make sense given you are healing him.
Remember that if you have gained any Rot at the time of collecting the 4th spirit stone, you also take damage as the purification burns it out of you.
Considering the King accumulates Rot every day, and it takes several day / night cycles before you'll have enough stones, not to mention the amount of time you need to get inside the palace, I think it's safe to say the King is too far gone at that point to survive the purification.

Plus, if you have the Dragon Clan DLC, you get a neat journal which reveals that The Wyld is not exactly the spiritual embodiment of good that we are lead to believe. Like, seriously, there's a part in the story where the druids are trying to sacrifice a child to harvest its life force, and it's actually the Dragon Clan who comes to their rescue.
Nature is pretty hostile by default, at least by intention. A lot of foods we eat, humans find satisfaction in partaking of failed defense mechanisms such as pineapple, lemon, peppers, and other stuff that destroys or repels other creatures.
