Sorry if you touched upon this already, but I found 3 easy tricks that will really help you rack up the credits:

1. Stations under Korian Siege will always sell their stuff at insane discounts -- up to 90% off of the normal price! Of course they usually won't have much to sell, but nonetheless make sure you clear out their stock for big profits.
2. Stations under Militia Embargo will always buy most stuff above market price due to shortage.
3. Any station with an archaeological finding will inevitably send out a treasure veseel to a science station. This treasure vessel (triangle with the icon of gold ingots inside it) can carry anywhere from 5 to 9 Alien Artifacts, among other valuables. Hijacking this cargo means an easy 250,000 to over 500,000 credits.

One more: if you can, always try to trade with merchants on the fly, as they always pay way above market price (+20% seems to be the norm) for your goods. If you're hauling a lot of cargo and they pick some of the less valuables ones, just jettison them all and they'll be forced to pick the more valuable ones. You can always tractor back everything you jettisoned later so you're not losing anything.

Good tips. Too add on trading with merchant ships you can use the jettison trick to make them buy your contraband. For example, you see a distress beacon and rush to help merchant ships. In the process of destroying pirates you can loot the dropped contraband then use jettison trick to immediately sell it for a good price with little to no risk of offending the system militia. "what they don't know can't hurt you"

That too. If you're extra shrewd though, always pirate the merchants before trading, because they'll still be friendly, and will even buy back their own loot! Or if you have some really valuable commodity such as the progenitor shard, face of gozu or antimatter speck, sell that to them, then kindly ask for it back. If they refuse then just do it the hard way. :D

Aside: now that I've fully maxed my Citizenary and Militia standings, I no longer really care about being "the good guy". If I'm hulling over 100k worth of contraband and the Militia decides they have a problem with it, I just turn them into space dust. Nothing a few militia missions can't fix anyway if I really care about my militia rank. Besides the only good thing about having a really high militia rank is they will *always* accept your bribes. Although I swear I also seem to get scanned a lot more frequently too, so once every while I blow them up just to balance things out a bit. ;)

I use a smugglers cargo hold they cant scan the contraband. also how does a milita have a bounty on them lol

The pirate factions can issue a bounty just the same as any other faction.

There are also Militia "traitors" in many missions that can and do carry bounties.
