Broadsides underpowered?
As fun as trading broadsides is, it just doesn't seem very effective. It seems vastly more effective to just blow things to bits with turrets. Turrets can fire in almost any direction so its much easier to acquire a target. There's no countdown where my guns have to aim at the target to hit it. They just fire.

My turrets do far more damage than my broadside guns. The only time my broadside guns are useful is when I'm at point blank range. When I'm too close to miss I'll just fire them as quickly as possible. Its very effective.

But at long or medium range? The damage from broadside guns just seems too low. I don't even bother using them. I'll grab some turrets and focus on whatever ship I want to blow up. The narrow fire arc combined with the aiming time drops broadsides to below turret damage. Time not shooting or not on target is time that the guns are doing zero damage.

One other thing I'd like to see would be the option to set my broadside guns to autofire, similar to my turrets. It would be nice for my broadside gunners to shoot at things (depending on what target I have them fire at in the tactical menu) while I'm aiming the turrets to shoot other things.

What ship are you using? differnt ships have differnt numbers of broadsided (ranges from 2-20) so if you have a ship with more turrets then broadsided that could influence there damage.

I am wondering about the same thing. Broadsides are THE damage dealers of a ship, with giant explosions, bullets (or rays, whatever). And just like Eric said, turrets do a LOT more damage even though they were meant to be just support fire. I hope devs will balance the powers of the guns at soonest.

Still, the damage dealt and impact of broadsides is just marginal.

Damage - To what? Shields? Because that is quite common.

If I have taken down the shields on a capital ship, and move out of range of short range weapons, my broadsides still pack quite a punch.

Easily 20% per salvo of their structural health.

Funny, my Minotaur's broadsides can damn near one shot all but the largest, toughest dreadnaughts that are only found near the very end of the game. At this point my turrets are just anti fighter support that can't even hope to scratch the shields of those hulking pirate lords in their ultra mega hyper dreadnaughts.

I got your point. After having torn down their shields, even the biggest ships go down very fast. True. BUT, still the animation/ power of broadsides seem much too weak for me. Maybe devs could improve the visuals of the broadsides, so that they impress more than they do till now.

I'm running mark 4 lasers as broadsides, and a set of pulse cannons and particle lasers on my turrets and believe me, using those broadsides does vastly more damage, besides, i use broadsides to focus on the target i want, and all the auto firing turrets to deal with the loads of fighters that buzz around, they all get shot to pieces in no time. the one thing i dont even have bought: secondary weapons, now THOSE are useless IMO

I thougth the same thing till later on. The dmg on a broadside weapon is multiplied x the number of broadside ports you have if they all connect. Once I got neutron beams for my broadside weapon I changed my mind about them. =p

If you thing the animations aren't conveying the power of the brad sides you could probably try the different options to see which animation you like the best

What do you mean by "option" exactly? Graphic settings? I set everything to max, this isn't the thing here. NEW / improves visuals are needed.

I mean can use a Pulse Cannon, Tachyon Cannon, Proton Cannon, Neutron Beams or Electro-Bolt (there be some aline drops I missed). The default broadside isn't the only one.

personally I like neutron beam the best.

I'm also finding the broadsides more trouble than it's worth.

When comes to fighting the heavies, I just park on their arse and let my turrets do the work.

Saves maneuvering and using the crap zoom for the big broadside weapons. Also saves getting counter battery fired by their big guns.

The only thing that I've found broadsiding any good at is clearing mine fields.

You do not seem to get my point > I changed my argumentation from damage to pure visuals some posts ago... None of those broadsides managed to blind my sight yet. I WANT THAT!!

I had assumed that you had only seen the visual animation of the default broadside and you might like the animations of the other options more, but if after seeing them all and you still don't like the animations there isn't much you could do other than zooming in as much as possible, increasing the brightness of your monitor and moving your head closer to the screen.

WHAT?
Broadsides underpowered?
are you aiming?
Don't then stick to them and open fire again and again you will dust anything.

I am flying a McKinley with only Proton lvl 3 guns.
So rather weak for this ship.
