Ship/weapon comparisons?
I've been looking for a spreadsheet or table with all the ship stats so I have some idea what I want to buy. Things like at what stations/sectors/factions the ship is available, cargo size, speed, hull, components numbers, turrets numbers as well as more subtle info like how many of those turrets can face back, to the left, forward... because it's clear that some ships can have all their turrets facing anywhere, and that some ships have their broadsides grouped more closely than others, I assume that this means that you can spray and pray with better success.

I'm hoping there's some assassin ship with a tight broadside and plenty of rear-facing turrets and lots of speed so you can get in, blast your target from point-blank range, and then escape without having to kill every single enemy...

Which brings up a question: Is there any point to having a really fast ship? I don't really see any options and no videos that suggest that having a light ship is much advantage at all: It seems that fights end when there are no more enemies, period and so any ship that isn't big and strong enough to destroy multiple enemies quickly has no point to existing. I don't see any missile or mine evasion, and you either escape random ambushes instantly or not at all.

Fast, small ships are actually good for hunting SIGNIFICANTLY larger ships. If you're up against a Destroyer, and can't afford one of your own, a Corvette or LIght Frigate is better than a Heavy Frigate.

Why?

Because with a faster ship, your movement can outpace the enemy's turning, and you can keep yourself in a chosen shield facing on the target while varying up where you're being hit. You do also need to upgrade your systems to keep up the damage, of course. But with less systems to worry about than on the larger ships, that can result in you saving some money.

I total agree. Another reason is that your a smaller target. I have had a Barracuda for most of the game. It eats dreadnoughts for breakfast. I tried a bigger ship before that one and got tore up just because i was such a big target. The Barracuda was at one outlaw station in the first system and it's a mean gun boat. one of the fastest ships in the game as well as tiny.

Don't trust the listed numbers on Dumbfire Missile secondary. Even though it has higher listed damage than Mines... Just... Just don't.

I used Dumbfires all the way through mk5, until I finally gave up. Mines were so good, on top of apparently having WAY more ammo (Yes please I'd like to fire literally over 100 mines and still have over 100 mines left, on my Manticore).

Dumbfires also fire at odd angles on some ships. For example, even if stationary, the Tennhousen and Sturvile fired my dumbfires at a notable backwards slant. Meaning I had to lead even more than normal to land those hits in the ifrst place at anything but scraping up point blank.

Meanwhile, when I got the manticore, Dumbfires fired at a slight forward slant. So aiming them was much more intuitive with the Manticore, instead of "Okay I need to tilt my ship so far that my broadsides can't aim at them anymore if I want my dumbfires to hit them" if I was 1-2m away like I had to with my Sturvile at times.

Componted by ships being more narrow at the back, if you are attacking them from behind. And Grell Dreads being mostly empty space so your dumbfires will literally harmlessly pass through them if you don't hit their front (which means sitting in their broadsides range).

Simmilarly. Flak turrets are garbage at actually hitting even slow moving gunships most of the time. Swarm missile turrets are nice when they hit, but they are slow firing and will waste lots of ammo on fighters that are almost dead.

If you have more than 5-6 turrets, Totally set a single pulse turret to Anti fighter. Oh my god such a difference in results compared to trying to make use of Flak or Swarm missile turrets. (Though if you got a beefy Dreadnaught with 10+ Turrets, go wild with swarm missiles for fun because you got the firepower to spare).

RE: Smaller target. That's part of why I liked the Manticore so much. I forgot it was a "Destroyer" because it's basically half as long, or less, than pretty much every other destroyer in the game. So despite it's speeds I was able to dodge some broadside fire from enemy ships.

The Minotaur is my super favorite ship though, shame I only got around to grabbing it when it was time to head to Charon.

EDIT: Also. Beam turrets. Beam turrets are super great when they are firing. However, using your deflectors cancls their charge phase, and even stops their shot early. In more crazy fightss my Beams rarely had a chance to even fire until the crowd was thinned out to safer levels, while my pulse turrets would be able to take shots between deflector uses.

This is less of a problem if you are in a big ol destroyer or dreadnaught. But if you are trying to zip around a dreadnught and it's gunship swarm with your sturvile, life is gonna be rough if you don't use those deflectors.

@waxx66man...Regarding your last paragraph.

You have to start out in a fast, light ship. You have to upgrade it equipment wise to be successful at making money to buy bigger ships. The best way to make money is doing side missions (which necessarily involve a lot of combat), IMO, and trading the valuable items when you find them. You should find a lot of advantages to fast and maneuverable. They ARE a viable alternative to big boats with lots of weapons that are slow and sluggish. :)
