Damage to a turret mount increases the heat cost of firing it linearly, but introduces a random element of misfire as well, so it's erratic. There is a special 'misfire' sound, so you'll know when it's happening (and it will be pretty obvious in the cadence of fire as well)
Steering and engine impairment is mostly linear, as is shield and deflector recharge.
You can also buy a repair bot which will repair subsystems in flight (slowly) - but it cannot repair hull or reactor damage, which always has to be repaired at a station, and does not repair while you are taking damage.
Yes, I noticed some of the components like the repair bots in your amazing video.
On one hand it's more realistic to have it so that if the damage is so great it is essentailly "blow off" (kind of like the dish on top of the millenium falcon) and force you to be more careful / tactial in firefight. But also somewhat more annoying if it is easy to take component damage and may get sort of redundant for gameplay to be running back after every medium to high risk fight to repair.
guess it depends what you cupof tea is.
Originally turrets blew off. But it WAS super annoying. So instead, the turret mount gets damaged which impairs the turrets, and they never blow off.
