Is there a way to run above 60FPS?
I havea 144hz monitor and was just wondering if there is a way to run it above 60fps? Mine seems to be locked at 60.

Overclockers say this....

if your FPS varies a lot you will definetely notice it and it will be annoying.

The way to fix this is by capping your MAX FPS to a number like 59 or 120 or whatever you wish to set it to depending on game.

You can do this with programs like MSI afterburner in Rivatuner settings.

-------------------------------------

I use a 144hz monitor, but I actually run it at 120hz. It seems best to have the framerate match the refresh rate, or be half of it (maybe just an equal division of the refresh rate is all you need. I can't remember the proper reasoning and explanation for this..). So at 120hz, 120fps would be ideal, but 60fps would also be good. That said, although I do cap some games at 60fps (hence why I run 120hz), I usually just cap them at 120fps and leave vsync off. My frame rate tends to bounce up and down anywhere from about 55 to 120fps in some games, and I hardly ever notice any screen tearing in most games (I definitely noticed this to be a benefit of a higher refresh monitor. Regardless of how others will argue against it, this is definitely my experience).

Once you start getting above 60fps, visually, things do look slightly better/smoother, to a point (maybe up to around 80-90fps, I'm not quite sure), but it's the reduced input lag and much improved responsivness that you really benefit from (It also doesn't seem to matter so much that the framerate isn't half of or matching the refresh rate once you go above 60fps, but maybe that's just me). Games will feel like they're following your input a lot better, and that is the main reason to get a high refresh rate screen smile.gif The thing is, you'll need to very high frame rates to enjoy these benefits. Still, you can definitely get some benefits when only playing at around 60fps. For a start, you won't find vsync as necessary, which can in turn help you get a better average frame rate, depending on the situation of course.

So to answer your question more directly, yes it may feel a bit off playing at 60fps with a refresh rate of 144hz. You would probably find it better to play at 72fps or 144fps. So you can just run 120hz without vsync instead for the games that are capped at 60fps, or you can just run them at 60hz with vsync on. Seeing as a lot of games will let you adjust the refresh rate, you can have different refresh rates for different games, depending on what framerate you expect to get. So for a source engine game where you might be able to keep 144fps easily, you can just tell that game to run the screen at 144hz.

Hopefully that all made sense and I didn't over complicate things haha tongue.gif

Try disabling VSync. The FPS should shoot up to what ever your card can produce.

EDIT: if that DOES work, it indicates that your display might not be using the 144hz at all right now.

Vsync was disabled but it turns out the problem was I had my 2nd monitor cloned (and shut off so I didn't even remember doing it) and my 2nd monitor is only a 60hz monitor. Thanks for the reminder about Vsync though, that made me remember about that 2nd monitor. :)

Game is running a solid 144fps now.

My 144hz monitor is also a Gsync monitor so my refresh rate always matches my framerate (unless it drops below 30fps). :)
