best ship is the barracuda with mining lasers after you jump to juno get the best shields and mining lasers you can then jump back to starting galaxy to farm highest missions

I do like mining lasers, but 3 broadside ports won't cut it vs late-game dreadnoughts... upgrade Barracuda to mercenary Sturville = lightning speed + good firepower. Install Tachyon Cannon broadside ports: fast and deadly at close range, and you can fire them like a rapid-fire shotgun pointblank even without aiming.

I like the Icarus fitted with a smuggler's hold for blockade busting, and the Deep Horizon with ramming deflectors for taking down Dreadnoughts. The Minotaur looks cool, but doesn't have great firepower and isn't as manoeuverable as the DH

During the story grind, my favorite ships are the Hellion and the Tennhausen. Both have above average broadside count for their price point, which makes for cheap firepower since you only have to buy the broadsides once. I'd wager that, for any "build a ship under X credit net worth" challenge, Tennhausen would be one of the top ships in DPS performance until you get high enough to start buying large quantities of MK6 turrets.
